Go to the top of the class — west and northwest Sydney’s best performing schools have been revealed following the HSC results.

Out of the 107 schools in western Sydney, the top three were selective — James Ruse Agricultural High School at Carlingford came first followed by Baulkham Hills High and Girraween High.

Non-government school Al-Faisal College at Auburn, Tara Anglican School for Girls at North Parramatta, Penrith High School, The King’s School at North Parramatta, Alpha Omega Senior College at Auburn and Mount St Benedict College at Pennant Hills rounded out the top 10.

The brilliant minds at James Ruse High also propelled their school to become the best performing in the state.

James Ruse principal Rachel Powell said she was extremely proud of the students and staff including Year 10 student Jason Liu who topped the state in software design and development.

“They worked incredibly hard all year to get these results,’’ she said.

“There was a lot of anxiety because of the new syllabus, particularly English, history and science so teachers had to learn a completely new set of skills and contents, and teach a different syllabus, so students didn’t have any knowledge of the exams so it was a guinea pig year.’’

James Ruse Agricultural High School first in course students Jerry Shen (Japanese extension (school of languages), Jocelin Hon (maths extension 2), Eunice Cheng (science extension) and Kim Zheng (maths extension 1).
