Three correctional officers at a Sydney prison have been arrested and charged over the alleged assault of an inmate in their care.
Police at Riverstone Area Command received a report regarding the alleged assault of a 41-year-old inmate at Parklea Correctional facility by three correctional officers on July 13, according to NSW Police.
A spokeswoman said the matter was referred to detectives from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit before three men, aged 36, 43 and 49, were arrested at their homes in Leonay, Marsden Park and Milperra on August 4.
“The 43 and 49-year-old men were each charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, and common assault,” the NSW Police spokeswoman said.
“The 36-year-old man was charged with two counts each of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others, and common assault.
“It will be alleged in court each of the men were involved in the assault of the inmate at Parklea last month.”
The spokeswoman said all three officers were granted conditional bail to appear at Blacktown Local Court on August 25.
“The man suffered a number of cuts and bruises ... however, has since recovered,” she said.
An MTC-Broadspectrum spokeswoman told NewsLocal two “former” correctional officers were arrested over the alleged assault on an inmate; “a casual correctional officer was also arrested and stood down”.
“MTC-Broadspectrum notified NSW Police about the alleged incident on July 13 and immediately launched an internal investigation,” the spokeswoman said. “MTC-Broadspectrum does not tolerate behaviour that threatens the safety and security of the prison.
“Allegations involving staff misconduct are referred to our investigations branch and NSW Police.”
MTC-Broadspectrum refused to answer whether the officers were stood down as a result of the internal investigation.
