Commuters are set to benefit from half price off-peak travel on buses, trains, metro and the ligh rail from July 6 as the NSW Government reveal major changes to public transport pricing.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance announced the NSW Government initiative to encourage the staggering of essential travel across the network as social distancing measures remain in place.
“The vast majority of commuters will benefit from these changes with either cheaper travel or no change to their fares,” he said.
“A third of commuters will save an average of $3.60 a week, based on current travel patterns.”
The half-price travel comes as the minister revealed the government had waived Cash Price Index increases and “rejected” IPART recommendations to increase Opal fares by 20 per cent over four years.
New peak travel times will be between 6.30am and 10am on Sydney Trails, Metro, Light Rail and buses, while Intercity Trains peak times will be modified to between 6 and 10 am.
Afternoon peak times will be between 3pm and 7pm across all public transport modes.
Weekend travellers will also see an $8.05 all day travel cap on Saturdays and Sundays, howeverNewsLocal understands the $2.50 Sunday travel cap will be removed.
