ROUND 3 T20, Penrith v Blacktown Mounties at Howell Oval
After a fruitless full day in the field on Saturday, Penrith have rebounded with a comfortable T20 victory over Blacktown Mounties to jump to third place on the Thunder Conference ladder.
Having toiled away for nearly a century of overs in their drawn Belvidere Cup contest the day before, Penrith’s bowlers led by NSW pathways spearhead Hunar Verma, restricted Blacktown to a modest 7/138 on Sunday afternoon.
In reply, Panthers skipper Ryan Gibson smashed 39 from 29 balls as the home side coasted to back-to-back T20 wins with the loss of only two wickets in the 18th over.
“It was really good from the boys today, especially backing up from yesterday’s 98 overs in the field,” said Gibson. “The bowlers did really well to keep them to a gettable target, and it was nice to see the batters finish the job and not leave it to someone else.”
On a wearing pitch, Gibson hoisted leggie Smit Raval over the long-on fence in the 10th over before departing next ball with the score on 96. From there, Nick Adams and hard hitting NSW under-19 rep Jordan Watson combined to knock off the remaining 43 runs.
“I feel like I’m hitting the ball nicely at the moment, obviously I was disappointed to get out.” said Gibson, who two weeks earlier had blasted 106 off just 53 balls against a hapless Wests attack.
“But young Watson came in and finished it off beautifully for us. It’s good to see him backing up from the great year he had last season.”
Gibson returned to Penrith this season after a successful stint with West Torrens in Adelaide that included appearances for South Australia in the Marsh Cup and Strikers in the BBL.
“I’m back with my family, and with a couple of other boys that I haven't seen for a long time, so it’s been really good. There’s such a good culture at Penrith this year, so I’m just enjoying my cricket.”
Still signed with the Strikers, the Penrith captain will add to his 25 game BBL career when the competition starts next month.
His departure for two months leaves a significant void, but with up-and-comers like Watson, Penrith supporters have reason to be optimistic.
AROUND THE GROUNDS - T20 ROUND 3
After opening the competition with a couple of low scores, Dylan Hunter exploded for Sydney University at Rosedale Oval. In an astonishing 60-ball knock, Hunter hit 120 runs with eight sixes to set Fairfield-Liverpool a formidable 4/212.
Devlin Malone then spun a web over the locals taking an impressive 5/7 as Uni marched to an emphatic 148 run victory.
Following on from his 103 off just 54 deliveries in round two, Bankstown’s Nick Carruthers took the long handle to Parramatta’s attack. With ten sixes and five fours, the opener cruelly fell one run shy of consecutive tons in a breathtaking 38-ball carnival at Merrylands Oval.
Parramatta were never in the hunt, falling 145 runs short of the target in 15 overs.
Sydney remain the only undefeated team in the Sixers Conference after they rolled Manly for 69 in a 56-run win at Drummoyne.
At Petersham Oval, the Randwick Petersham Cricket Club and Inner West Council reopened the grandstand and long room in honour of local cricket and rugby league legends, Dudley Seddon and the Hughes family.
On the field, Gordon posted 5/192 en route to a 31-run victory over the reigning T20 champions.
The action in both conferences continues when round four gets underway on Thursday 17 November. Matches at all ten venues are scheduled to get underway at 3.45pm.
