A $1.3 million dollar sports pavilion has opened in West Epping Park ready for sports teams and kids to enjoy after social isolation measures have been lifted.
The impressive off-white angular building features multiple change rooms for home and visitor teams, two designated referee rooms, and women’s and men’s accessible toilets.
The sports pavilion which was funded by the NSW Government will be used by local clubs Epping Football Club and West Epping Cricket Clubs.
The upper level features a large open-air balcony along with a canteen where parents and families can watch their kids play under cover during rain or shine.
“It’s a magnificent building that overlooks the grounds,” Epping Football Club president Malcolm Arnold said.
“People can sit in the cafeteria and look over a premium spot over the grounds and enjoy coffee while watching their children play.”
A spacious storeroom on the lower ground will allow clubs to safely store their football and cricket gear and a suspended concrete walkway links the building to the carpark for easy access.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Bob Dwyer said green spaces and public sports facilities were “vital” for the community.
"We now have a first-class open space available for all members of the Epping community to come and enjoy," Cr Dwyer said.
Mr Arnold said the club had only just started moving their equipment in and setting up when the pandemic restrictions forced the pavilion to shut down for now.
Yet he said the new pavilion will be “crucial” for the local sports clubs and community after the coronavirus pandemic.
“The new facility will be crucial when we come out of this isolation and get the community back out and socialising with each other. The new pavilion will be a community hub for us,” Mr Arnold said.
Epping Liberal MP Dominic Perrottet said even in these difficult times he’s pleased the state government and Parramatta Council are still getting on with the job and delivering for the community.
"While right now our community is doing it tough, we will get through this and it is important that we continue to deliver the facilities our community needs and expects," Mr Perrottet said.
"When things return to normal, our sporting clubs will be able to take full advantage of these fantastic modern facilities, which I hope will encourage more people to get out and join their local club."
The newly opened sports pavilion came after further upgrades at West Epping Park including two synthetic sports fields, a skate park, basketball court, tennis courts, barbecue and picnic facilities.
