YMCA Epping celebrates one of its most successful gymnastics coaches

YMCA Epping gymnastics coach Ken Benson has been nominated for News Local’s Service to Sport award.

This year, YMCA Epping celebrates 50 years as one of the most successful gymnastics organisations in the country.

Much of the centre’s history as a breeding ground for elite gymnastics talent is thanks to Ken Benson.

Not that he’ll admit that.

“I believe it is the up and coming coaching that deserve this recognition,” the 77 year-old said.

“As I say now when talking to the current coaches ‘I am the past’, ‘you are the present and future.’ You are the people to further develop and progress.”

Ken has long-been regarded by those in the industry as one of Australia’s most successful gymnastics coaches.

As a coach, Ken guided his young athletes to bring out the best in themselves.

His extensive work has seen him receive numerous awards throughout his career, including being named the inaugural Australian Coach of the Year in 1998.

He was also awarded an OAM in 2004 in recognition of his dedication to gymnastics and the YMCA.

“Ken’s tireless efforts in the gymnastics field at YMCA Epping have seen many of his students compete at both state and national titles, as well as at Olympic Games,” said YMCA NSW Acting CEO Craig Fisher.

“Ken has been an inspiration to all who have come in contact with him- for all of his hard work and dedication to the YMCA NSW we are truly thankful.”

Ken Benson is now in the running to win the Service to Sport award, as part of News Local’s Junior Sports Star awards.
