Sailing is a truly unique experience.
Few other sports can be both thrilling and tranquil at the same time.
However for all the joy it brings, sailing has struggled to attract the attention of the younger generation in an increasingly competitive market.
Hunters Hill Sailing Club is leading the charge to get kids into the sport through its specially designed Tackers program.
Aimed at kids between seven and 12, Tackers serves as an introduction to sailing, with no experience or even membership required.
Tackers leader Greta Quealy said the program is about “making a concerted effort to get kids into sailing.”
“We have many kids coming from non-sailing backgrounds. It’s about making sure the kids feel really welcome and comfortable on the water.”
According to Hunters Hill Sailing Club president Maria Quinlan, Tackers is creating not only short-term participants, but lifelong sailing fans.
“Our focus continues to be on encouraging all sailors to learn and develop their skills while offering an opportunity for everyone who wants to sail to get onto the water,” she said.
“This energy and welcoming approach creates a culture of inclusiveness and is a key to our success in encouraging sailors onto the water and fostering a lifelong love of sailing.”
HHSC’s next tackers program is running from Monday, December 18 until Friday, December 22.
