Multimillion-dollar plans have been revealed to build a new marina on the Parramatta River to cater for soaring boat ownership on Sydney’s harbour waterways.
The historic century-old Halvorsen’s boatshed site in Putney would become home to a new marina with floating pontoons, moorings and fixed berths as part of a $7.3 million development plan lodged to Ryde Council.
The development would have a 220m marina pontoon extending into the Parramatta River, 36 fixed berths accommodating vessels ranging between 12 to 18m in length, and a craft pontoon which will be available for public use.
The proposal by developer Lilac Pty Ltd also includes new signage, offices, safety buoys and upgraded seawalls.
The development marks the latest chapter for the historic site which was the home to the Squire’s Brewery – recognised as one of Australia’s forest breweries.
The brewery – established in the 1790s by First Fleet convict James Squire – before being replaced with a boatshed in the 1930s.
Design plans stated the marina has been positioned to “generally maintain the location of existing waterway constraints for navigation” and to “minimise navigational conflicts with different types of crafts using the waterway”.
Plans stated the development would respond to the “significant demand for new berths in Sydney Harbour”.
“In particular, it will provide new opportunities for communities west of the harbour bridge to access and enjoy the waterway for a variety of recreational uses,” the plans stated.
“It also increases opportunities for community interaction and the use of the Parramatta River by opening up the site for the first time in its recent history for public access to the water.”
Figures from the National Marine Manufacturers Association reported boat sales reached a 13-year high over the last four years with manufacturing of new boats also experiencing an increase.
Several other Sydney marinas are currently planning upgrades to cater for demand including Woolwich Marina which is proposing to almost double its capacity for larger vessels.
The plans have been lodged with Ryde Council and are due to be assessed by the Sydney North Planning Panel.
