Most viewers are happy to take in charming French scenery of the Tour de France from their lounge rooms but Stacy Mitchell will churn out push-ups during the race to raise funds for the Alannah and Madeline Foundation.

The North Ryde fitness buff will participate in the sixth annual Push Up Tour, which he co-founded with his wife Erin six years ago.

Participants are asked to complete one push up for every kilometre of the famous French race.

That equates to 3460 push ups over 21 stages of the 23-day event.

“Each year it becomes a little more significant and the opportunity to give back to children in need, and it’s good to be charitable,’’ he said.

“As you get older, you become more thankful.’’

Funds raised will support the Alannah and Madeline Foundation help vulnerable and at-risk children.

Mr Mitchell, a father of Xavier, 7, and Indiana, 4, established the charity after learning more about it from his wife Erin, who worked as a social worker at Sydney Children’s Hospital.

The Transport for NSW project manager quickly signed up colleagues, who formed teams to support the foundation, which was set up in memory of Alannah and Madeline Mikac, aged six and three, who were killed with their mother and 32 others at Port Arthur massacre in

April 1996.

Mr Mitchell has plenty of discipline to help him reach a goal of more than $50,000.

“I was in the army for 11 years as an officer and I was a reservist for 22 years in the military,’’ he said.

“I think fitness and culture goes hand-in-hand and I’ve stuck with it.”
