Ryde police are urging residents to make sure their doors and windows are locked following a spate of break-ins across the area including several in Epping and Hunters Hill. The break and enters have occurred at various times, both day and night. Thieves have usually gained entry through an unlocked window or door and in some cases even when the victim has been at home. Police stress leaving windows and doors unlocked not only makes it easier for potential thieves, there is less chance of fingerprints or DNA being left at the scene. Ryde police point out in most cases these are preventable crimes. Don’t make it easier for thieves… lock up!
EASTWOOD
A 31-year-old woman was carjacked on Saturday evening after a thief threatened her with a knife before making off with her car.
At about 9.30pm, the woman returned to her car which was parked in the Glen Street carpark.
A man entered her car from the passenger side and threatened her with a large kitchen knife before demanding she leave the vehicle.
The woman complied with the demand and the man drove off in the car through the Glen Street exit.
Ryde police officers patrolled the area but did not find the car, a white 2014 Toyota Corolla with NSW registration CTB78N.
The man Is described as being in his mid-20s, with a dark complexion, dark curly hair, average height and medium build.
He was wearing a dark hooded jumper and dark pants.
GLADESVILLE
A 73-year-old Gladesville man booked himself a court appearance after reversing out of his driveway and hitting another car early last Tuesday evening. The man drove his vehicle along Flagstaff St Gladesville around 6:15pm and into a driveway before reversing the vehicle out to attempt a U-turn. But he reversed into the path of another vehicle and hit it. A passer-by helped him from the vehicle and sat on a garden wall before falling into the garden. The other driver noticed the man smelt of intoxicating liquor and phoned police who arrived a short time later. Police noticed a strong smell of alcohol on the man’s breath and he appeared unable to stand up by himself. Both drivers were breath tested with the 73-year-old returning a positive roadside reading. He was arrested and taken to Ryde police station for a breath analysis which returned a high range reading of 0.191. He was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for Drive with High Range PCA, his second such offence. His licence was suspended by police and he will appear at Burwood local court on March 12.
WEST PENNANT HILLS
At 1.20am on Monday January 29, police were patrolling New Line Road when they saw a 33-year-old man riding an electric bike in front of them before he turned onto Victoria Road.
Police stopped and spoke with the man. Checks revealed he was wanted in relation to a domestic incident. The man was placed under arrest and he and the back pack he had on him at the time were searched. Police found several tools, drill bits and two lock picks on a set of keys which please will allege could readily be used as house breaking equipment. Police also found an ice pipe. The man was taken to Ryde police station where he was charged with possessing house breaking implements. He will appear in Burwood Court on February 19.
RYDE
Police were conducting random breath tests on Victoria Rd at 12am last Tuesday when they stopped a 24-year-old Denistone West man for a breath test. He returned a positive roadside test and was arrested and taken to Ryde police station for a breath analysis. The driver returned a reading of 0.052 and was issued with a Court Attendance Notice for driving with a low range blood alcohol level. He will appear at Burwood local court on February 12.
MACQUARIE PARKS
A 15-year-old teen who fancied a new wallet picked one out at a department store in Macquarie Park last Tuesday but the decided not to pay for it. The youth took the wallet around 3.52pm and put it in the back pack he was carrying with him. The teenager left the store without attempting to pay for the item. The teenager was stopped by the store’s Loss Prevention Officer outside the shop and taken back to the security office. Police arrived and spoke with the teenager. Police say he will be issued a Youth Caution under the Young Offenders Act at a later date.
