A young police officer has been released from hospital after being attacked with a knife in Marsfield.

About 8.45am on Wednesday officers from Ryde police area command stopped a car on Culloden Rd near the Waterloo Rd intersection when they saw a 24-year-old man yell and move to the middle of the road and approached the man concerned for his safety.

The man, an international university student from an African country was asked to move off the road when he became aggressive and confronted the police.

The man was armed with a small paring knife, and during the confrontation the 29-year-old male officer was stabbed in the right upper arm.

Police tasered the man before three officers were required to subdue and arrest the student.

Acting Superintendent at Ryde police station, Detective Chief Inspector Patrick Shirley said the arrest was “quite a struggle”.

“The male continued to struggle even after being tasered - even once he was handcuffed still resisted in terms of thrashing his body around,” Det Insp Shirely said.

Despite the injury, the offier continued to fight and help his colleagues make the arrest.

The attacker was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital under police guard to undergo a mental health assessment.

The injured officer sustained a puncture wound to his right bicep and required minor treatment by way of a dressing, at the North Shore Hospital.

Det Inspector Shirley said the officer was lucky and is doing well.

He is currently back at the police station to help with the investigation of the incident.

“It’s very lucky the police were there on the spot, and the police were trained and armed to deal with these situations, that were able to confront this individual,” Det Insp Shirely said.

“The attacker was not known to police in Australia. We don’t have any records of him criminally or mental health records.”

These things are a occupational hazzard... We saw today where quite a young police were able to deal with the situatoin and resolve it, safely and thank God, no one was seriously injured as a reulst of it.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced.
