The Coalition Government will pump $479 million into a complete makeover of Ryde Hospital as part of a massive health cash splash before next month’s NSW election.

The major investment will be spent on a string of new services at the current site of the hospital, with construction to start in the next two years.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the Ryde revamp was part of the government’s plan to deliver world-class healthcare for local communities.

“We are not only building new and upgraded hospitals across the state, we are also ensuring people receive the best possible healthcare they need,” she said.

Historic Denistone House, which houses health facilities, will be preserved with new buildings to accommodate extra emergency and critical care.

Ryde MP Victor Dominello said the new investment would transform Ryde Hospital.

“It will create a new Ryde Hospital,” he said. “And the historic Denistone House will be preserved and be surrounded by modern and enhanced emergency, critical care, inpatient, community and ambulatory care services, as well as maternity services.

“Ryde Hospital has an emotional connection for most people in Ryde. Personally, I have a special affinity with Ryde Hospital as my sisters and I were all born here.”

Labor’s candidate for Ryde, Jerome Laxale, said it had taken eight years of government for Mr Dominello to “remember he is meant to stand up for our community”.

“Whether it’s privatising local hospitals or elective surgery wait-time blowouts, we all know that you can’t trust the Liberals with healthcare,” the Ryde Mayor said.

“Under Dominello and the Liberals and Nationals, local Ryde patients are waiting longer for elective surgery.

“Instead, the Liberals and Nationals are focused on rampant overdevelopment and splurging $2.2 billion on stadiums rather than investing in the health and hospital system.”
