A new pop-up library featuring click and collect book services and up-cycled furniture is one step closer to opening in Hunters Hill.
Council has recently leased a site on Gladesville Road in the contemporary mixed-use development Maison near Daschund cafe as a library.
The space which is yet to be fitted out will be a flexible library space and is set to open mid-2020.
Situated in the heart of Hunters Hill precinct, the library will be just a stone’s throw away from bustling cafes including Via Napoli pizzeria, Dachshund Coffee and the Hunters Hill Hotel.
A click and collect book service will be launched allowing members to reserve items online from the Lane Cove Library for pick up at the Hunters Hill pop-up.
A range of library programs and events will be held at the new library as well as services to download books, audiobooks and magazines for free.
In a nod to sustainability, materials once destined for landfill are set to be recycled and turned into décor in the new library.
Council has partnered with the UNSW’s Sustainable Materials Research and Technology Centre which works on initiatives such as recycling materials to create high-quality products suitable for urban buildings.
At last night’s meeting, council endorsed pilot projects which will see the library be equipped with a range of furniture and decor made from waste plastic, glass, corflute and textiles from local supply chains.
A Hunters Hill Council spokesman said, “They can take glass, cups and take all these and turn them into tiles. They will make the materials which could be used for the fit-out and furniture.”
Cr Ben Collins said: “Through UNSW at the materials department they can get old clothing and plastics and turn it into tiles. It’s amazing stuff.”
Hunters Hill has never had its own library space until now and has been in a shared service agreement with Ryde Council since 1957.
Council’s existing agreement with the City of Ryde expires in June. From then on Council will move into a new library shared services agreement with Lane Cove Council which is expected to save up to $500,000 a year.
Under the new agreement, Hunters Hill residents will have continued access to their usual libraries, as well as a new library space.
Council has released an online survey for community feedback on the new library space which can be found here
