PIZZA can be a serious business — but not for Marco DeMarco.
The Ryde pizzaiolo is an award-winning pizza acrobat, taking spinning dough to the next level.
Pizza acrobatics involves intricate and often fast-paced pizza dough tossing routines — a mixture of skill, fun and entertainment.
DeMarco started working at a pizzeria in Italy a 14, and learnt not only how to make pizza but how to entertain audiences at the same time.
As a teenager he had grand plans for his pizza skills.
“I loved to practice as I wanted to perfect how to do acrobatics with pizza, and in time go into competition with the best in Italy and some day around the world,” he said.
His wish came true, and he has won numerous first places in Australian and European competitions.
“I enjoy seeing people’s faces and the smiles,” he said.
DeMarco said the biggest challenge was finding the time to practice, as well as coming up with new routines.
“When you love what you do, you find time,” he said.
“And when you want to perfect something it’s about trying new things and creating a wow factor.”
DeMarco will be showing off his skills at the Italian Wine + Food Festival on Sunday, August 26 at Australian Technology Park in Eveleigh.
The festival runs from 10am until 6.30pm. Tickets start at $25 when pre-booked and can be purchased online.
