Construction has started on the new $218 million state-of-the-art education precinct in Sydney’s north-west catering for kindergarten to TAFE students.
The Meadowbank Education and Employment Precinct will welcome more than 2,500 students from relocated schools, Meadowbank Public and Marsden High School, and 120 students at an Intensive English Centre once complete.
It will also feature a new combined Multi Trades and Digital Technology Hub at TAFE NSW.
Education Minister Sarah Mitchell, Skills Minister Geoff Lee and Ryde MP Victor Dominello turned the first sod at the Meadowbank site on Tuesday.
Mr Dominello said he was “delighted” that work had started on the mega education project.
“Ryde is being transformed into an education and employment powerhouse and these new facilities for the schools and TAFE NSW will create a high-quality education precinct at Meadowbank,” Mr Dominello said.
Ms Mitchell said the primary and secondary schools will feature modern flexible learning spaces, libraries, school halls and plenty of outdoor recreational areas for students.
The precinct was approved last month through the state government’s Planning System Acceleration Program and is set to create 813 construction and 220 operational jobs.
“Together, the schools and TAFE projects will support almost 1,900 construction jobs,” Ms Mitchell said.
Contracts have recently been awarded to Roberts Pizzarotti for completion of the design for the new school facilities and to Hansen Yuncken for the completion of design for the TAFE NSW site.
The planning approval for the TAFE NSW project is being progressed separately and is expected in the coming months.
Mr Lee said, “The new precinct will be a showcase for student centred learning and integrate primary, secondary and tertiary education on one planned site.”
