Macquarie University’s women’s AFL and rugby union teams have raised $6000 for charity as the clubs celebrated their 2019 Ladies Day on Saturday.
Held as a celebration of women in male-dominated sports, the Ladies Day saw healthy crowds descend upon Macquarie University Sports Fields to watch the teams go around and donate money to the Breast Cancer Network Australia and Brain Cancer Group.
The highlight of the day was a thrilling AFL Sydney Women’s Premier Division clash between the Macquarie University Warriors and the East Coast Eagles.
Led by GWS Giants captain Amanda Farrugia, Macquarie Uni recovered well from a slow start to take a comfortable 5.0 (30) to 3.1 (19) lead into the half.
However the Warriors were unable to hold off a determined Eagles outfit in the second half as East Coast kept the hosts scoreless in the final quarter to claim a narrow 6.3 (39) to 6.1 (37) victory.
Speaking after the game, Farrugia said the Ladies Day showed how important it was for female athletes to be proactive when it comes to getting behind causes that resonate with them.
“Female athletes often feel a sense of responsibility to promote their own agendas and if we don’t, who will?” she said.
“We’ve done a lot to promote women’s AFL and the emergence of women’s sport and that’s obviously taking off in a big way, so we also feel the responsibility to promote causes that are close to our hearts and to raise money for things that are important to us, breast cancer being one of them.”
