Rugby league legend Peter Wynn has been an Australia Day ambassador for 19 years, taking part in celebrations across the state from Byron Bay to Parramatta.

“Every year has been a different place,” he said.

Throughout his nearly two decades as an ambassador, the Parramatta Eels premiership winner has collected hundreds of Australia Day memories, from hot air ballooning at Parramatta to receiving a cheer from Eels supporters in Manly.

“Every year gives me a great memory, it’s too hard to pinpoint (one),” he said.

This year he will spend the day as the Ryde Council ambassador, joining the citizenship ceremony and Citizen of the Year awards at North Ryde School of Arts, followed by a family-friendly concert in the evening at North Ryde Common.

The citizenship ceremonies have always been a special part of the day for Wynn, who loves the “look of joy” on the faces of new Australians when they receive their certificate.

“It all comes out in a smile,” he said.

Wynn said he also enjoyed the Citizen of the Year awards, where people were recognised for what they put into the community.

The awards are at 11am, while the concert at North Ryde Common starts at 5pm.

The concert will include the Battle of the Bands, where three finalists — Dysfunction, Dial Denial and Saturn V — compete for the chance to win $1000 and a mastering session at Studios 301.

Musicians Jay Parrino and the Ozzy Iconics, and the JC All Stars will also perform on the night, alongside rides, sporting activities, food trucks and a thong-throwing competition.

The concert will finish with a fireworks display at 9pm.
