Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition.
NSW Police confirmed the man died from his injuries just before 11am.
A Police spokeswoman said it was understood the man had parked his car on the side of the road to recover material that fell off his vehicle.
The police spokeswoman said the driver of the ute stopped at the scene and was co-operating with officers as part of the investigation into the incident.
Witnesses, in the lead up to the crash, reported seeing a “tradie” on the side of the road who was “tying down his load” after corrugated metal came off his vehicle while driving in the centre lane of the highway.
Two citybound lanes of the M2 remained closed as of midday and motorists have been encouraged to avoid the area.
Public transport is also impacted with diversions in place for citybound buses via Carlingford Rd and Epping Rd.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam vision has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
