Kellyville artist Jan Cleveringa wants his 17,000 LED lights comprising the Corporate Snake threading its way through Eden Gardens to evoke serious thoughts about the corporate world’s impact on the environment.

“I guess it’s a political artwork about discarded waste materials but it’s also about call to action to reform the Corporation Act,’’ he said.

“It’s about this idea of mine to put in a sunset clause in the Corporation Act. When companies are starting, they always have to have gatekeeping.”

That idea would mean businesses, “the machine of our culture” would become more accountable when it came to their environmental footprint.

Cleveringa said the light bulbs he found on Gumtree were still in good condition before they were bundled to form his submission for Eden Unearthed at Macquarie Gardens, where all artists portray green messages through their displays.

He says he wants people to view “sustainability in a different way with a deeper level of putting a solution to an issue rather than artwork to look at which is nice”.

“The idea came about because of all the light bulbs. They all worked and they could be distributed to others,’’ he said.

The Last Resort

It looks like a giant bunch of unruly garlic but artist Clare James’ piece for a Macquarie Park art exhibition portrays nests safely incubating and raising young creatures.

The Victorian artist has submitted The Last Resort for the Eden Unearthed exhibition.

The piece expresses her fascination with the natural world, from her garden to wild places.

The work attempts to capture intricacies, complex cycles and beauty while highlighting habitat loss, climate change and extinction.

“The Last Resort is the place they went when there was nowhere else to go,’’ she said.

“Different species on the brink of extinction still held on to the hope that they could bring just one more generation into the world.

“The Last Resort is their last hope.”

Eden Unearthed is at Eden Gardens, 307 Lane Cove Rd, Macquarie Park, from August 1.
