Young comic fans will have the chance to learn the tricks of the trade from popular children’s author and illustrator James Foley these school holidays.
Foley, an author and illustrator, will launch his new book, Gastronauts, as well as host cartooning and comics workshops in Beecroft and North Ryde on Sunday and Monday.
Gastronauts is the third in the S. Tinker Inc series of junior graphic novels, which follows young inventor Sally Tinker’s adventures.
After trying to replace her brother with a robot in the first book, Brobot, and zapping a dung beetle with a growth ray in second novel D ungzilla, in her third adventure Sally shrinks a submarine and explores her baby brother’s insides.
Foley will visit Beecroft and North Ryde on Sunday and Monday as part of his tour of NSW and Victoria.
His workshops will teach children aged 8-12 years how to create their own comic creations, and coincides with 24-Hour Comics Day on October 6, a challenge to create a 24-page comic book story in 24 hours.
Foley said comics “can be used to tell all sorts of stories, for children as well as adults”.
“Creating a comic book page is like creating a jigsaw puzzle from scratch,” he said.
“Learning to make your own comics requires children to practice their written literacy, visual literacy, planning and graphic design skills.”
Foley will host a free one-hour workshop on cartooning and mini-comic-book making at Harry Hartog at Macquarie Centre at 2.30pm on Sunday, October 7.
He will also host a three-hour workshop followed by the launch of Gastronauts at The Children’s Bookshop in Beecroft at 9am on Monday, October 8.
The workshop costs $50 to attend, while the book launch is free and will begin at noon.
