OPPOSITION Leader Bill Shorten believes the Australian Conservatives contesting the Bennelong by-election can only divide Liberal voters and help Labor’s cause.

Mr Shorten joined Bennelong candidate Kristina Keneally at the Epping prepoll this morning and spoke to voters.

There are 12 candidates in the by-election, including Joram Richa of Senator Cory Bernardi’s fledgling Australian Conservatives party.

Surveys have indicated the Conservatives have seven per cent of the primary vote, just behind the third-placed Greens (nine per cent).

Mr Shorten was optimistic about the consequences.

“It’s no surprise to me the Conservatives are doing well against the Liberals, because the Liberal party is very divided,” he said.

“What Australia needs is a united government.”

While the Conservatives and Liberals have a preference deal, both will be hoping voters follow the how-to-vote cards.

Mr Shorten visited Ryde Hospital early this afternoon to talk about healthcare.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull joined Liberal Bennelong candidate John Alexander at Macquarie Park to talk about jobs and the economy.

They visited Raytheon Australia, an arm of the US defence contractor.

The by-election is on Saturday.
