“THAT was a crazy night and I don’t think we are ever going to see anything like that again.”
Sea Eagles in-form prop Darcy Lussick was describing the infamous “Battle of Brookvale” which took place between Manly and the Storm on August 26, 2011.
And as the five year anniversary approaches for the game which Manly won 18-4, Lussick reflected on that brutal encounter he prepares to back up when two sides clash again at the fortress this Saturday.
Lussick said in that 201l game he had a scuffle with Storm forward Ryan Hinchcliffe which resulted in players from both sides running in.
“Back then you could throw punches- you weren’t really allowed but people did,” Lussick said.
When Manly’s Glenn Stewart and Melbourne’s Adam Blair were sin-binned they started fighting as they walked off which sparked a huge brawl that spilt over the sideline.
When Stewart and Blair had their blue Lussick said he ran in.
“I probably shouldn’t of. but I thought everyone was running over,” he said.
“It was all a bit of a blur to be honest and it blew up.
“There was so much emotion and adrenaline I probably didn’t realise what had actually happened until a few weeks later when I took a deep breath and saw it and thought ‘oh no, this is going to be talked about for a while.’
“I’m really happy just to leave it behind, a lot of people still bring it up with me today about how much they remember it.
“It ended up costing me pretty dearly.”
Lussick was suspended for three weeks and when he was available again in the week of the grand final coach Des Hasler did not pick him in the side which beat the Warriors 24-10.
“But I don’t blame Des one bit for that, I hadn’t played for a while,” Lussick said.
“It was all my own fault, I still look back on it and it hurts me because I think that I could have played in the winning grand final my first year of NRL.
“But that is just the way it goes and hopefully I get another opportunity the next couple of years.”
