IN-FORM backrower Jamie Buhrer has declared that while some people may have written off the Sea Eagles during their run of seven losses on the trot, he and his teammates never abandoned hope of playing in the finals.

And he says their 36-6 victory over St George Illawarra last start which broke the drought was just what the team needed as they continue to scramble for a spot in the play-offs.

“It was a much needed win, I don’t think we were far off in the few weeks prior,” Buhrer said.

“It gives not only myself but everyone a lift with so many new faces in the pre-season to be playing well together.

“And this is what we can expect from now on.

“Now it’s important that we back it up this week (against the Warriors in Perth on Saturday).

‘’If we can perform like that we believe we are a semi-final calibre football team.”

And Buhrer said that has been discussed among the playing group.

“That’s always the goal at Manly to make the eight- and even a step further, the top four,” Buhrer said.

“It doesn’t matter whether you are in a rebuild or not and it remains the goal regardless of previous results.

Buhrer is well aware of the big challenge that faces the side in the remaining eight rounds of the premiership.

“If we drop one of these games it becomes really difficult and if we drop two we can’t make it- it’s something like that,” he said.

“But while we still have a mathematical chance, that’s what we will be striving for.”
