GETTING your baby’s attention for the perfect picture is a problem facing parents everywhere, but an inventor from Mosman believes he has a solution.
“My wife and I have taken more photographs of our 18-month-old Lennon than we care to count,” Dave Canavan said.
“We would take 20 or 30 images just to get one shot and he still wouldn’t be looking at the camera. I noticed that a rattle never failed to make him turn his head, so I figured why not add one to the phone.”
Mr Canavan, 37, thought the idea was too simple to not already exist.
“I am always coming up with ideas and I was really excited when I realised no one had made one of these devices,” Mr Canavan said.
“But that was when the real challenge began.”

All the former science teacher had was a sketch on the back of an envelope, but he started hunting around for a 3D printing company.
He found one in Melbourne and after months of back and forth, and several prototypes, he had a product he was almost happy with.
WOULD YOU HELP FUND THIS INVENTION?
He spent months, and thousands of dollars, on the patent pending process and is now at the stage to think about manufacture.
“I got a manufacturing quote and it was $30,000 to get the machine tooling done. I couldn’t get the quote till I had the prototype, but once that’s done we will be able to churn them out,” he said.
Mr Canavan is now launching a crowd-funding campaign to finally get the product made.
“I’ve come too far to give up now, and I think the product will really help out families,” he said.
He said the product, the Babyfocus, will sell for about $15.
