New tenants are snapping up sites in the next major shopping hub on Sydney’s north shore ahead of the precinct’s grand opening date this year.

Aldi, Coles and six new restaurants are among new shops confirmed at The Canopy development that will stand over six levels in the Lane Cove town centre.

The $80 million project will also include a children’s playground, performance stage, 500 carparks and six charging bays for electric cars.

Lane Cove Council general manager Craig Wrightson said tenancy agreements had been signed with six restaurants, with Coles and Aldi also due to open in June.

Mr Wrightson said final construction works are underway to complete a new laneway linking the site to Longueville Rd.

Finishing touches are also being added to a new two storey children’s “venture” playground and a digital screen for live performances, movie nights and major events.

Lane Cove Mayor Pam Palmer believes the project will have a positive flow-on effect to existing businesses in the town centre by boosting foot-traffic in the area.

It comes amid a spike in business closures in the suburb including the Flannerys organic grocer and the Leaf Fruit Market.

“It’s a very competitive market for small businesses who are all trying to compete with each other but I think the addition of carparks and public space will encourage people to the town centre,” she said.

Coles, which is due to close its current store in Lane Cove, said the new supermarket would open to shoppers in mid-June.

“The new Lane Cove Park supermarket will feature an expanded convenience range with ready-made meals, snacks and drinks, a market-style fresh produce hall, and an improved store look and feel,” a Coles spokeswoman said.

Aldi is also due to open in the same month and is currently advertising for retail assistants.

The council said the retail hub will operate from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.
