A SYDNEY retiree living on Sydney’s north shore is sharing his spectacular harbour view with the world live streaming it through a webcam from his balcony and, so far, it has reached two million people.
Lloyd Gledhill set up the webcam from his Kirribilli apartment overlooking the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge last year and the spectacular scene has attracted about 10,000 views a day since October.
“People say it’s their go-to website,” he said.
Mr Gledhill, 78, set up the webcam as a retirement project and is surprised by its huge success.
The webcam was installed early last year and its popularity online soared once the summer cruising season started.
He has found that people love looking at the cruise ships in the harbour as they have either taken a cruise or are hoping to enjoy a voyage someday.
“They are dreaming,” he said. “There’s such a massive interest in cruises.”
People also log on to look at the weather and he gets a spike in hits when a storm rolls across the city.
He has found that parents overseas with children living in Sydney also log on to see the live view as it makes them “feel closer” to their offspring.
The webcam gets about 10,000 hits a day and he has had viewers from Nepal, Iceland and Congo. Most of the hits come from Australia, the UK, Germany and USA.
“It’s still growing at a great rate of knots.”
