Swim club makes giant splash at state championships with impressive medal haul
WILLOUGHBY Swim Club has made a giant splash at the 13-18 years NSW State long-course championships.
WILLOUGHBY Swim Club made a giant splash at the 13-18 years NSW State long-course championships after capturing their highest placing at the annual inter-club event.
Led by a trifecta of golds from Callum Lowe-Griffiths and a brace of golds from Lucas Anderson and Elliot Long, the Willoughby Leisure Centre-based club bagged 10 golds, 8 silvers and 11 bronzes to finish third behind first-placed Carlile and second-placed Trinity.
They eclipsed a previous highest placing of 10th and their haul of 29 medals was one medal behind Carlile's.
Willoughby coach and former Olympian Graeme Brewer said the team exceeded exceptions to snare a top-three placing at the Homebush championships.
"They outdid themselves this year," Brewer said.
"We don't normally anticipate finishing in the top 10 because we are a small club."
Callum-Lowe Griffiths, 14, collected six medals in the under-13s including three golds in the 400m and 800m freestyle and 400m individual medley.
Brewer said the talented all-rounder was one of the most versatile young swimmers he had seen during his coaching career.
"He has a lot of strings to his bow," he said.
Elliot Long, 18, captured the splash and dash double in the 50m and 100m freestyle in the 17-18 years division with Ben Schafer, 17, claiming silver in both events.
