Crows Nest father-son boxers take on opponents at Norths Leagues

The Stanaways are preparing to enter the boxing ring against different opponents at Norths Leagues next week.

CROWS Nest pair Glen and Nathan Stanaway aren’t your typical father and son.

They are both preparing to enter the boxing ring against different opponents at next week’s Turbo Financial Amateur Fight Night at Norths Leagues.

Nathan, 15, makes his amateur debut against South Sydney PCYC’s Ben Robinson, and following, Glen takes on Mexican Hector Patricio in a 75kg masters bout.

Nathan started the sport in 2011, his dedication encouraging his dad to get involved. Glen has lost more than 20kg since starting the sport. The prospect of seeing his son fight is daunting.

“I’m very proud of Nathan, on one hand, and obviously worried for him, on the other,” Glen said.

“I’m anxious for him and I feel it because I’m his dad.

“It’s not like going for a round of golf.

“It is wonderful to see my own child succeed at a very difficult sport, and I say success because he’s managing to deal with it.”

Glen juggles family life with his commitment to training under boxing expert Mark Pitts and at Fitness First St Leonards.

He also works at Yachting Australia.

“Boxing is not a sport to take lightly,” he said.

“It’s totally all-absorbing. My family will be happy to see me resume normal life the day after.”

Nathan is a 15-year-old Mosman High School student who dreams of a career as a computer engineer.

LINDFIELD RUGBY’S NEW ERA

“I’m pretty excited about it all — it’s a family thing that has started between my dad and I,” he said.

“I want to have as many fights as possible. I’m going to keep doing boxing as a hobby.

“You really need to dedicate yourself to boxing and there are no excuses.”

The November 6 fight night is titled North Sydney versus The Rest at Norths Leagues
