Cricketers, netballers, footballers, a triathlete, indoor skydiver, snowboarder, cyclist and a surf lifesaver have scooped the major athletes awards at the NSW Champions of Sport awards.
It was third time lucky for Sydney Sixers and Southern Stars gun Ellyse Perry who won Athlete of the Year while Newcastle’s paratriathlete Lauren Parker added the Athlete of the Year with a Disability title to the NSWIS award she won just a week ago.
Perry, who grew up on Sydney’s northshore, is the No.1 allrounder, No.2 batter in the world and the first player in history to score 1000 Twenty20 International runs and 100 International Twenty20 wickets.
Despite only a relatively shot time in the sport, Parker broke through for her first world championship in 2019 in paratriathlon.
The dinner also saw former Test cricketer Glenn McGrath, from Sydney’s south, become the third recipient of The Waratah.
The award recognises an individual’s leadership and passion for NSW sport.
The Northern Beaches had two winners in Paralympic snowboarder Ben Tudhope (Young Athlete of the Year with a Disability) and the Sydney Surf Pro which won Event of the Year.
The Masters Athlete of the Year award was shared between Parramatta cyclist Geoff Stoker and the Central Coast’s Paul Lemmon.
Team of the Year was the inner west based NSW Swifts, who claimed their inaugural Super Netball crown, with the Football NSW Cerebral Palsy team winning Team of the Year with a Disability.
Blacktown’s indoor skydiver Amy Watson won Young Athlete of the Year while the man guiding Cate and Bronte Campbell and Paralympian Ellie Cole, Simon Cusack, won Coach of the Year.
Rugby World Cup referee Angus Gardner was named Official of The Year and NSW Rugby League CEO Dave Trodden Administrator of the Year.
