A LARGE water slide described as a “spaceship” could be part of a multi-million revamp of the landmark North Sydney Olympic Pool.
North Sydney Council is giving the community a choice of six options ranging from $16m to $72m to upgrade the ageing facility.
The water slide joins a variety of suggestions including diving boards, an underground carpark and a shaded grandstand.
Stephen Badger runs a swim school at the pool and said the slide looked “like a spaceship”.
But he pointed out that it is only an artist’s impression and that a slide could prove very popular in the pool.
“I think it makes it more of a family friendly environment,” he said.
However, he questioned the need for diving boards and pointed out that their inclusion would double the heating costs of the water.
COUNCIL CALL TO SPLASH OUT ON POOL RESTORATION
COUNCIL REVEALS $190M SHOPPING LIST
Images unveiled by the council today show a large red slide encased in a bubble overlooking the historic pool. It could form part of a new family leisure pool on the site.
The concept images of the slide were created by Brewster Hjorth Architects.
“The 50m pool in the North Sydney Olympic Pool complex has reached the end of its life and requires significant upgrading,” said Duncan Mitchell, director of engineering and property services.
“Council is taking the opportunity to redevelop the complex so that it can continue to meet the needs of current and future generations.”
The plan to upgrade the pool has been the subject of heated debate at the council.
It was decided at a meeting earlier this year to put only the most expensive $72m option on display but this was overturned allowing all six to be placed on public exhibition.
The six design options were developed following community consultation.
The harbourside pool was the venue for two Empire Games and the setting of 86 world records in swimming and diving.
It is popular with tourists due to its location and views of the Harbour Bridge.
The six design options for the pool are on public exhibition and the council is seeking community feedback until September 25.
