AN alternative route to high school qualifications has allowed one Ravenswood student to consider a career in medicine.
Ashley Masters, who was the school’s Dux of the International Baccalaureate Diploma, achieved the top IB mark in the world – a perfect score of 45, equating to an ATAR of 99.95.
She is now considering a career as a surgeon after being inspired by her time volunteering at the Sydney Adventist Hospital.
She said younger students needed to cultivate the art of self-discipline.
“Ninety-nine per cent of actually achieving the goal is just hard work and determination,” she said. “You can’t wait for motivation to start working, because it’s inconsistent and fleeting.
“Instead, train yourself to put what’s important to you first, even if you don’t feel like it in the moment. At the same time, always be sure that you are making the most of the time you’re having off,” she added.
Ravenswood’s class of 2017 IB cohort achieved an average overall score of 36, equivalent to an ATAR of 94.6.
On the other side, its HSC results were equally high, with the school’s HSC Dux Isabella Gerardi coming first in the state in visual arts and sixth in legal studies.
She now plans to study Arts Law at Sydney University and intends to devote time to helping to educate children in the slums of Cambodia, after participating in a service learning trip with Ravenswood in Year 10.
Principal Anne Johnstone commended the students on their achievements.
“These results reflect our students’ drive and commitment,” she said.
“We are so proud of their efforts and achievements.
“The results are particularly significant considering Ravenswood is a non-selective school and supports students of varying academic levels in their pursuit of an IB qualification.”
The IB allows students to take subjects not on offer in the HSC.
