THE driver of a bus that burst into flames on one of Sydney’s busiest roads has been praised after his fast actions saved 88 passengers from injury.
The fire occurred near the Spit Rd and the Awaba St crossing at Mosman, closing all but one southbound lane and delaying buses by at least 30 minutes.
Despite the bus being full, no injuries were reported and all 88 passengers are understood to be safe.
A witness said the driver noticed something was wrong and pulled over when a passer-by told him the bus was on fire. He opened all the doors to get passengers off.
“He got them all off very hastily,” Harbourside Inspector Dean Lindley said.
“He should certainly be congratulated for what he did. He did a great job.”
Roy Bendall, who was a passenger on a school bus that drove by the fire, said it was a dramatic scene to witness.
“When we went past a short time ago, there were flames piling out of the back of the bus,” Mr Bendall said.
“I’d say the blaze was reaching about a foot and a half above the roof of the bus.
“It was well and truly alight, it was quite dramatic to watch.”
Mr Bendall said a fire extinguisher was used by the driver to help contain the fire initially.
Another bus driver who had been travelling behind it on Spit Rd also pulled over to help.
