NSW dives for the crown at the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships

MORE than 160 of the leading lifesavers tested their skills in the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships.

MORE than 160 of the leading lifesavers from around Australia dived into the pool at the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships at Knox Grammar School, Wahroonga, on Saturday.

The interstate competition, won by NSW, included team and individual events in manikin carry, manikin tow, line throw, obstacle swim and the simulated emergency response competition, a timed event where lifesavers are tested on their initiative, judgement, knowledge and skills.

Competitions were held in the under-14s, 16s, 19s, opens and over-30s/masters divisions.

Royal Life Saving national sports adviser Gray Parkes said the championships were designed to test a competitor's ability in events that simulate scenarios a real lifesaver would face.

"All the events are based on rescuing a person who is in immediate danger of losing their life and getting them to safety," he said.

"This event celebrates the vital role lifesavers play.

"These top athletes are heroes across Australia, we should never forget that.

"I am always so proud to see how dedicated the Royal Life Saving competitions are and the high standard of competition and athleticism."
