A new outdoor gaming area is among the features of a multimillion-dollar revamp of one of the north shore’s biggest RSL clubs.
The North Sydney Leagues Club has released a $2.6 million proposal to redevelop its Cammeray site in a move it said would better cater for its members and patrons.
Plans for the Abbott St site include demolishing sections of the club, including parts of the foyer, a rugby league office, bottle shop, and a terrace to make way for new lifts, stairwells and other works.
The outdoor gaming area would have a capacity for 120 people and include gaming machines, new seating and landscaping works
Plans for the set-up also includes a condition that noise “shall not be audible” within homes in the mostly residential area from midnight to 7am and a 6m tall privacy screen would be built to block noise and the smell of cigarette smoke wafting into neighbouring properties.
The terrace would remain open to 1am on Sundays to Tuesdays, 2am on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 3.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.
The club said modifications to the building would result in changes to carparking spaces and the addition of lifts would cater for disabled patrons and people with prams.
“The proposal improves accessibility for a wide range of people within the community. It not only addresses today’s code requirements, but in particular seeks to enhance the built environment for the mobility-impaired and young families with prams,” the plans stated.
Norths chief executive Luke Simmons described the upgrade as “overdue” and would be “game changer” for the club.
“It’s primarily aimed at accessibility – it’s remarkable in this day and age we haven’t got lifts from each level of the building and will allow patrons to move from the carpark throughout the club,” he said.
“For our show nights – whether it’s The Wiggles or Neil Diamond – we have kids with prams and elderly patrons. It will be a game changer
“The gaming area will also square off the building (and) the privacy screens will to make sure no noise emits to neighbours.”
Plans show the number of poker machines would remain capped at 291 and neighbours potentially affected by noise would be given a contact number for a duty manager who will be required to respond to any complaints.
The proposal has been lodged to North Sydney Council and is currently under assessment.
