NORTH Sydney Council is taking action against boats crowding out precious parking spots.
New laws will come into force in October that will allow boats parked for more than 28 days to be impounded.
“A boat on a large trailer can take up to three car parking spaces,” said mayor Jilly Gibson.
“They are taking up a very precious community resource, which is on-street parking.
“It’s an issue that gets residents hopping mad.”
Cr Gibson said boat parking has been one of the major sources of complaints to the council from residents.
There are certain roads near the water throughout the LGA that are prime spots for boat parking.
And she pointed out that the majority of the boats do not belong to locals.
“Cars belong on the street and boats belong on the water,” she said.
“It’s not reasonable to purchase a boat if you’ve nowhere to put it.
“Most boats don’t belong to North Sydney residents, they belong to residents of outer Sydney.”
Cr Gibson is hopeful that the new rules will lessen the impact of boat parking on certain streets and make life easier for residents.
The council has lobbied for several years for changes to legislation to prevent the long-term parking of boat trailers.
Boats and trailers are not entitled to a parking permit in the area.
All the roads in the LGA will be covered by the new rules.
