TARONGA Zoo received $45.7 million for existing capital works in the 2016-17 State Budget last week.
A Taronga spokesman said the money covered spending on projects already announced for the zoo’s ongoing redevelopment program.
“This includes the $12.1 million Taronga Institute of Science and Learning, which is scheduled to start construction later this year,” he said.
“A further $13.7 million will be spent on a range of projects to deliver an inspiring new visitor experience through the unique collection of animal and educational exhibits at both Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo.
“Other projects include the $10.7 million Sumatran Tiger Adventure exhibit at Taronga and $7.2 million for other restoration and minor capital works projects at the zoo.”
The new Sumatran Tiger experience is expected to open next year.
Environment and Heritage Minister Mark Speakman announced the money for Taronga as part of a package worth more than $287 million for state parks, zoos and gardens.
