A REDESIGN of McMahons Point Wharf has met with a mixed reaction.

Transport officials went back to the drawing board after the initial proposal to upgrade the wharf left residents unhappy.

On one hand, the Friends of Sydney Harbour campaign group are satisfied with the compromise.

But Lavender Bay Precinct thinks the changes haven’t gone far enough.

The new plans seen by the Mosman Daily show that the roof has been taken off the floating pontoon, which has also been moved north east.

They also show a walkway to the pontoon about twice as a long as the original plan.

It includes an uncovered gangway and concrete bridge.

“Precinct thinks if the ramped gangway started from the covered shelter this would have the effect of moving the pontoon north out of the view,” said secretary Ian Curdie.

The wharf boasts one of the most spectacular views of Sydney Harbour as it faces the Harbour Bridge and Opera House.

Friends of Sydney Harbour said they would have preferred a smaller wharf but they were informed that this was non-negotiable.

“We’ve achieved the best compromise we think is available,” said chairman John Molyneux.

Construction on the new wharf is expected to start mid next year.

“Transport for NSW has developed the preferred concept design of the McMahons Point Wharf upgrade based on extensive feedback from the community,” a department spokesman said.
