A man has been charged with a string of offences after allegedly brandishing a medieval style sword towards three strangers at a boat ramp on Sydney’s north shore.

Police arrested the 41-year-old Lane Cove resident on Saturday after he allegedly armed himself with the weapon and confronted a fisherman at Riverview Boat Ramp on Friday night.

The ordeal began just after 9pm when the man allegedly demanded to see the fisherman’s ID before pushing him into the Lane Cove River.

A police helicopter joined the search for the man.

The commotion caused two nearby residents to rush to the fisherman’s aid only to be allegedly threatened by the assailant who brandished the sword towards them.

North Shore Police said the 41-year-old then chased the pair into Burns Bay Reserve before running into a nearby unit block as a large police presence was deployed to the area.

“It’s understood the man hid in a communal area at the unit block and given it was a Friday night there were a lot of people at home at the time,” a police spokesman said.

“Officers attended and located the sword but the offender couldn’t be found at the scene.”

The man is due to appear in Hornsby Court in July.

The police manhunt continued into the early hours with officers arresting the 41-year-old in Frenchs Forest on Saturday.

Police described the weapon as a “medieval style” sword, measuring 80cm long, and capable of “inflicting serious injury”.

It is unclear how the man obtained the weapon.

The 41-year-old was charged with offences including two counts of common assault and being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He is due to appear in Hornsby Court in July.
