Harris Farm is one step closer to opening a new outlet on Sydney’s north shore with plans underway for a new fresh food supermarket in the Lane Cove town centre.
Lane Cove Council has approved a $7 million design proposal to turn the former Coles supermarket on Burns Bay Rd into a Harris Farm outlet along with speciality shops and extra parking spaces.
The proposed store would become the sixth Harris Farm outlet on the north shore with plans also underway for a seventh store in the Turramurra town centre.
The plans come after Coles closed the doors to the Burns Bay Rd site last year as part of its relocation to The Canopy development on Rosenthal Ave.
Development works at the Burns Bay Rd site would include modifying the existing building into a new Harris Farm and creating new toilets, travelators, stairs and four extra carparks to the rear of the site – bringing the total to 61.
The former bottle shop and small grocer under the old Coles building would meanwhile be turned into speciality shops.
Lane Cove Council said the proposal to modify the existing building was consistent with local planning laws and would provide a “positive contribution to the streetscape.”
“The proposed modifications would result in substantially the same development for which consent was originally granted,” the council said.
Aplus Design Group, which has designed the proposal, said the company was “thrilled to be part of the Harris Farm Markets new chapter in the Lane Cove village.”
The company said the development would “improve the overall image and marketability of the village centre to attract new businesses and customers.”
“The new development allows for an activated and continuous retail strip, which enhances the overall village experience and is part of the greater vision of Lane Cove,” it said.
The approval is the first step in the development of the Harris Farm outlet and would require further detailed applications to Lane Cove Council for the fit out of the store.
Harris Farm is run by the north shore-based Harris family and is one of Australia’s most successful retail companies with 27 stores in NSW.
