Developers have scaled back plans for a major transformation of the recently closed Coles site in Lane Cove after sparking backlash from surrounding businesses, doctors and a childcare centre.

Specialty shops, food outlets, a medical centre and liquor outlet are included in revised development plans for the former supermarket site on Burns Bay Rd.

The proposal shows works would involve partly adapting the building into a three level complex, reducing the number of carparks from 44 to 37 and landscaping works.

There would also be room for a new supermarket on the third level as part of the $8 million application lodged to Lane Cove Council.

The proposal is scaled down from plans by developer Sun Property Lane Cove to build 29 apartments on the site which sparked multiple objections from surrounding businesses due to concerns including height, traffic and noise.

Birrahlee Preschool also raised concerns over traffic during pick-up and drop-off periods and

lack of parking outside the centre for parents.

Further objections were raised by nearby shop owners and the Bupa Dental practice due to impacts including potential construction noise.

Birrahlee director Deanne Allan said she was made aware of the plans at the weekend and would meet with board members in coming days to discuss the proposal.

The new application states the development would have fewer cars accessing the site than the existing Coles and would “improve the overall image” of the town centre.

The plans come after Coles closed the doors to the site as part of its relocation to the new The Canopy shopping centre on Rosenthal Ave.

Sun Property said the complex could also attract new businesses and customers” to the local area and create an “entry point” into the Lane Cove town centre.

“(The development) would enable shopping, retail and food and drink services to serve the community (and) is located in easy walking distance to facilities and public transport,” the plans stated.

The application states new on-site medical facilities would also support the region’s growing ageing population.

The North Shore Times has contacted Sun Property for further comment but did not receive a response at the time of publication.

The proposal is currently being assessed by Lane Cove Council.
