Police have launched an investigation after hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, jewels and gemstones were stolen from a waterfront home on Sydney’s north shore.
Owners of the Northbridge property returned home from dinner last Friday night to discover a safe containing more than $750,000 worth of cash and property was gone.
Police said items stolen in the haul included diamonds, jade statues, watches, a mix of Australian and foreign currency and approximately $200,000 worth of jewellery.
The unknown offenders made their way into the Coolawin Rd home thorough a unlocked balcony door on the upper level of the home.
Police said the owners were absent, having popped out for dinner between 7pm and 10pm, in which time the offenders managed to dislodge the safe bolted to the upstairs bedroom floor.
“I’ve been working in the command area for five and a half years and it’s certainly the most significant (break and enter) incident I’ve come across in that time,” a North Shore Police spokesman said.
“The amount taken from the home is significant and way above what we normally see in the region.
“The homeowners were obviously very shocked and whether the property was targeted is certainly a line of inquiry given they were only gone for a short window of time and that no other home was broken into during that period.”
The North Shore Times understands the owners have lived at the home for about two years and the safe was a feature of the property when they moved in.
Police said the investigation by detectives has included sourcing CCTV footage and asking neighbours if they had seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area.
Police said the incident was a reminder for residents across the north shore to remain vigilant of their home security.
“In this instance the first floor balcony door was closed but unlocked so made it that bit easier (for the offenders),” the police spokesman said.
“Whether you’re going out for an hour or ducking out to the shops one of the simplest things you can do to try and prevent being a victim of a break and enter is to secure your windows and doors.”
