Harris Farm could soon be opening a new supermarket at Chatswood Chase shopping complex.

Planning documents have revealed the fresh food retailer is in the early stages of taking over a vacant tenancy within the lower ground level of the shopping centre.

The supermarket would be located in the tenancy previously home to former toy store Toymate, located next to Kmart and opposite the food court.

Vicinity Centres – which operates Chatswood Chase – has released $3.6 million worth of development plans to expand the existing tenancy by 85sq m to accommodate a Harris Farm store.

There are also plans to update the shopping centre’s outdoor signage with new ‘Harris Farm’ logos.

The total size of the store would measure 1356sq m – making it one of the largest Harris Farm outlets in Sydney – behind the 2000sq m flagship Harris Farm outlet at Lane Cove.

Harris Farm is remaining tight-lipped about the details of the store, in a statement saying: “We don’t wish to make a comment on this at this current time”.

A Vicinity Centres spokeswoman said the company was “in negotiations with a number of new and existing retailers at Chatswood Chase”.

“We’re unable to share announcements until lease negotiations are finalised,” she said.

The plans for the new store – lodged to Willoughby Council – state a Harris Farm at the site would provide new retail options at the centre and “serve the needs of the local and wider community”.

“The site is highly suitable for the proposed development (and) is consistent with the relevant local planning controls,” the plans state.

Early plans show the store could trade from 7am to 10pm seven days a week – an increase from the current 8pm limits on Sundays and public holidays.

The plans come as Vicinity Centres prepares to begin work on a long-planned $295 million redevelopment of the shopping complex.

The project includes a new and expanded food court, offices and a ‘luxury shopping’ precinct.

Harris Farm was founded by the north shore-based Harris family and is one of Australia’s most successful retail companies.

The company is also planning to open a new store in Turramurra, due to open mid-2024.
