Chatswood’s CBD skyline is set to encroach further into surrounding streets under plans to turn three residential homes into the suburb’s next skyscraper.
New plans have been revealed for a 90m tower with 76 units and shops on a narrow block of land wedged between the North Shore Rail Line and the Pacific Hwy.
The proposal at 871-877 Pacific Hwy, located next to the Coles Express service station, is the latest development plan set to reshape Chatswood in coming years with a string of other major proposals currently under assessment.
Developer Goldfields Chatswood No. 2 said the proposal would meet population growth in Chatswood partly driven by the opening of the new Metro station which links the suburb to Sydney’s north west.
The development, estimated to cost $50.6 million, would include three levels of shops and offices, basement parking with 93 spaces, landscaping works and public artwork.
Residents would also have access to a fourth level communal open space area equipped with features such as a swimming pool, reading lounges, a pool deck, floating sunbeds, barbecue areas, a yoga terrace, sunken lounges and a firepit.
Plans stated the proposal was in line with Willoughby Council’s Chatswood CBD Planning and Urban Design Strategy which encouraged increased building heights in areas outside the existing CBD boundary limits.
“The proposal will deliver a contemporary, landmark mixed use development that leverages the site’s highly accessible and strategic location with the extended Chatswood CBD boundary,” the proposal stated.
“The overall built form reinforces the vision of the emerging Chatswood CBD (and) will contribute to the emerging high-density character within the suburb.”
Other features of the project would include new trees and a public walkway running through the site.
The proposal is among a growing list of skyscrapers planned in the Chatswood CBD including a 26 storey redevelopment of the Chatswood Mandarin Centre, a 22 storey expansion of Chatswood RSL, a 15 story apartment building at 3 Ellis St, and three towers on the corner of Victoria Ave and Brown St that would include an 18 storey hotel.
The proposal was lodged to the council last week and is currently under assessment.
