A P-plater and his passengers had a lucky escape after a car rolled over and caught fire at a notorious black spot on Sydney’s north shore.
Police have launched an investigation into the singe-vehicle collision at the corner of River Rd and Anglo Lne in Greenwich in the early hours of Monday.
Neighbours said they woke to the sound of the crash just after 1am when the driver lost control of his Mitsubishi and careered into the front fence of a home.
Police said the 18-year-old driver sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the nearby Royal North Shore Hospital.
No other people — including passengers of the vehicle — were injured in the incident.
Nearby residents said the crash was far from isolated and came after another collision at the same section of road on Friday night.
“This is the second night in a row it’s happened — all the poles were taken out on Friday and now this,” one neighbour, who asked not to be named, said.
“We called an ambulance and then I checked on my neighbours to make sure they were okay. Everyone was pretty shaken up by it.
“Our bedrooms are both at the front (of our house) and people come speeding over the hill — the road kind of bends a bit and obviously they don’t anticipate it.
“They need to put speed cameras in or something because it happens too much. Something needs to be done.”
Police said the driver of the Mitsubishi was breath tested at the scene and returned a negative result. He underwent further mandatory tests at hospital.
Both eastbound lanes on River Road were closed as firefighters extinguished the blaze.
The incident occurred metres from a memorial for a young motorcyclist who died after losing control of the vehicle in 2011.
Road safety figures show seven people were injured in 12 other crashes at the stretch of River Rd, between Russell St and Greenwich Rd, from 2014 to 2017.
North Shore Police said an investigation into circumstances surrounding the incident was continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers.
