An elderly man whose body was tragically pulled from Sydney Harbour after his car rolled into the water has been identified.
Ahmad Dunia, 86, lost his life in the tragic incident on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to O’Connell St in Greenwich about 4.15pm following reports a car had plunged into the Parramatta River near the boat ramp.
Mr Dunia’s wife, Halima Dunia, was also pulled from the water by two onlookers, who jumped 5m off a ledge to rescue her and took her to a nearby boat.
A police spokesman confirmed the woman was known to the driver and was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital suffering a suspected broken ankle, bruises, abrasions and shock.
Tributes are now flowing online for Mr Dunia in addition to requests for prayer for Mrs Dunia’s recovery.
“He returned to Allah, while his grandmother is in hospital undergoing surgery after their car plunged into the river,” they posted.
“Elevate his station among those who are guided. Send him along the path of those who came before, and forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds.”
A crime scene has since been established and police have launched an investigation into the incident.
A report will be prepared for the coroner, while police work to recover the vehicle for a forensic examination.
The Parramatta River reaches a depth of around 10m at Manns Point.
