MORE than 500 in-ground parking sensors will be installed across Mosman after Smart Parking secured the contract with council on Monday.
The company’s statement to the ASX said the sensors, among other new technology, would significantly reduce congestion, benefit retailers, help the environment and generate more money for the council, while Mayor Peter Abelson applauded the “top-class technology” to address the huge parking problem in Mosman.
He said the new technology was not about fining people initially – which would require a separate resolution of council – but it would help council gather more detailed information about how parking was used in Mosman.
Cr Abelson estimated there would be nine months between the installation of the new technology and enforcement.
“We can’t live in the 19th century where we go around chalking up tyres; it’s a Luddite technology,” he said.
Cr Simon Menzies, however, argued to maintain the status quo and blasted the parking sensors, which would ultimately be used “for revenue raising only.”
“I remain opposed to it and so do the shopkeepers,” he said. “I will bring a motion to the next meeting of council that council rescind its decision ... as a democratic response to overwhelming community objection.”
Cr Menzies said the parking sensors would deter people from shopping in Mosman and councillors had ignored a petition that about 100 shopkeepers had signed.
Council voted last year for the new technology. Smart Parking will also introduce a parking app showing available parking and a wireless overhead parking guidance system across three multi-level buildings.
