KU-RING-GAI

JEFF PETTETT (IND, COMENARRA WARD)

Jeff Pettett
Jeff Pettett

I have represented the Comenarra Ward as a councillor for the past 12 years and have been mayor and deputy mayor with a proven track record of delivering for our community. Over the last three years I have achieved the following: increased street sweeping, increased investment for new footpaths and more on the way, sports fields upgraded at Norman Griffiths, Comenarra Oval, Auluba Oval, Mimosa Field as well as neighbourhood centre upgrades.

Priorities for the next term of council need to be to help to ease the cost of living crisis for residents by limiting the annual rate rises which can be offset by having an immediate council expenditure review to stop any unnecessary wasteful spending. This also includes the use of expensive external consultants. Residents in Comenarra Ward are demanding more new footpaths and better roads so these are also major priorities. Our open spaces need to be protected and our recreational facilities need to be reviewed to make sure that they can meet the greater demand and changing needs of our community. In these challenging times it has never been important that the Comenarra Ward is kept in safe hands.

DAVID TAYLOR (IND, COMENARRA WARD)

Having grown up and attending school in Ku-ring-gai, I am deeply committed to the community that shaped me. I’m running for council to ensure our area thrives both environmentally and economically, focusing on sustainable development, improved community facilities, and mental health initiatives. As vice president of St Ives Football Club and director of the International School of Music in Turramurra, I understand the importance of strong local leadership.

My top priorities include enhancing local infrastructure, promoting environmental sustainability, and supporting community health and wellbeing. I believe in responsible governance that listens to residents and acts in their best interests.

ADRIENNE MCLEAN (IND, COMENARRA WARD)

Adrienne McLean
Adrienne McLean

I am Adrienne McLean, a fourth generation Ku-ring-gai resident running as an independent candidate for the Comenarra Ward in the upcoming Ku-ring-gai Council elections. Under the platform “Caring for Comenarra,” I am committed to preserving the unique character of the community while addressing its evolving needs. My key priorities include the protection of the Comenarra community and sports fields, ensuring they remain accessible and well maintained for all residents. I advocate for the upgrades of Turramurra, Gordon, and Lindfield town centres to enhance local amenities and support small businesses. I also support the revitalisation of Marian Street Theatre, envisioning it as a vibrant community arts space. Addressing the road conditions in Comenarra, I aim to tackle issues related to speed and congestion, ensuring safer and more efficient travel. I am dedicated to fostering strong community consultation, emphasising the importance of residents’ voices in council decisions, and promoting sound governance throughout the council. My deep connection to the area and commitment to its future make me a passionate advocate for the Comenarra community.

GREG TAYLOR (IND, COMENARRA WARD)

Greg Taylor
Greg Taylor

Hey. My name’s Greg Taylor. I’m a community independent candidate in the upcoming elections for the Comenarra ward of Ku-ring-gai Council. I’m a classical musician, ecological manager specialising in restoration and bushfire risk mitigation, and incumbent councillor. I would like to continue listening to and representing my community, especially advocating for: renewed and new multipurpose sport and recreation facilities, youth services, networking and venues for the arts, strategic planning, integrity and respect in decision making and providing the people and natural environment of Ku-ring-gai a voice. I feel our community’s long-lasting strength lies in its connection to both people and the environment. As your councillor, I’m committed to fostering that bond through sustainable and progressive policies and decision making.

MATTHEW DEVLIN (IND, COMENARRA WARD)

Matthew Devlin is also running as an independent candidate for the Comenarra ward but did not respond to the North Shore Times for this profile.

INDU BALACHANDRAN (IND, GORDON WARD)

Indu Balachandran
Indu Balachandran

I am a resident of Killara and we have raised our two teenage boys in this neighbourhood. I am running because I believe in strong, vibrant communities as a foundation for society and want to contribute to this work in my local community. I have a background in finance, economics and social impact and work in strategy and governance in the social purpose and environmental sectors. I sit on a number of boards in the university and social sectors and am involved in the council’s Multicultural Advisory Committee. I am a musician – I play an Indian instrument called the veena – with a commitment to arts and culture. My vision for Ku-ring-gai is a culturally vibrant, sustainable community that cares for our built and natural environment. My priorities are: 1. Locally-informed and sustainable housing solutions and development. 2. Strengthening connections through arts and culture. 3. Local climate action including energy and waste initiatives I have enjoyed an excellent campaign process to date, and a wonderful team of supporters has emerged around me with shared values of respect, positivity and inclusiveness.

SIMON LENNON (IND, GORDON WARD)

Simon Lennon
Simon Lennon

A retired lawyer, I have been a Gordon ward councillor since 2021. My wife Alicia and I have lived in Gordon since 1997, raising our six children. Our children’s futures motivate me. With the character and amenity of Ku-ring-gai under threat from the state and federal governments, I want to keep advocating for the quality of people’s lives. That requires housing choices, including lawns and gardens for people who want them. A healthy environment requires parks to play and trees around. I am pleased to have saved the former Gordon Bowling Club site to be a public park, Pennant Park, with a community garden and off-leash dog area if residents want them. I have also got Dumaresq Reserve underway. I want to keep them, the land by East Killara shops, and other green space in community hands. We can have parks as well as culture. Having secured some of the funds from a possible asset sale in Lindfield for the Marian Street Theatre, I hope to lead the next council into reviving cultural spaces in Ku-ring-gai. Our Ku-ring-gai and wider heritage I value includes the theatrical and architectural, along with other cultural opportunities enriching people’s lives.

HENRY SONG (IND, GORDON WARD)

Henry Song

I am a fresh candidate running for Ku-ring-gai Council in Gordon ward. As a professional and entrepreneur with experience in technology, finance, and clean energy, I bring a wealth of knowledge and a strong commitment to the community. Living in Killara with my wife and son, I understand the challenges and aspirations of Sydney’s north shore residents. I am passionate about building a community that supports families, fosters economic growth, and prioritises sustainability. I hold a master’s and bachelor’s degrees in science, a diploma in financial markets, and professional certificates in sustainable finance and net-zero principles. My leadership experience in both corporate and community environments has prepared me to tackle the key issues facing Ku-ring-gai. I am committed to managing growth in Ku-ring-gai by addressing housing density challenges through smart planning and sustainable development. I will ensure that the council manages funds efficiently and transparently, focusing on projects that genuinely benefit the community. A cornerstone of my platform is supporting Ku-ring-gai’s diverse population by enhancing recreational facilities, providing resources for seniors, and promoting culturally diverse initiatives that strengthen the community.

MICHAEL TUMULTY (IND, GORDON WARD)

Michael Tumulty
Michael Tumulty

My name is Michael Tumulty and I am running to become Gordon ward’s first community independent councillor. When elected I will donate my entire council salary to local children’s charities. I am not a politician and believe big government parties and special interest groups have no place on local councils. I am running not just to replace the people in those roles, but to change the decisions that they are making. After listening to hundreds of you, when a council can’t negotiate with the state Government over Transport Oriented Development, when a council doesn’t consult with its local community it exists to serve, then it’s time for new leadership in Gordon ward. As a lifelong third generation resident, I will use my 35 years executive roles in hospitality and leisure to make decisions for you, based on love, kindness and compassion. I believe now is the time to heal the wounds of division in our great community. I have dedicated the last several years to community service within our local community, helping both young and old alike. I run my own private charity in Vietnam, helping children less fortunate via my privately funded scholarship program. It would be my honour and privilege to serve you as your new councillor for Gordon ward.

BARBARA WARD (IND, GORDON WARD)

Barbara Ward
Barbara Ward

As a current councillor for Gordon ward and former deputy mayor. I am running for re-election to continue making a positive impact on our community. I’ve lived in Gordon for over 30 years, and my passion for serving our local area drives me. My background in business and public health advocacy, combined with a long history of leadership across various sectors, has equipped me to represent you effectively. During my time in office, I’ve championed governance improvements, advocated for responsible development, preserved our environment, and prioritised mental health and community wellbeing. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together, from saving vital community spaces, like Killara Bowling, Lawn Tennis Club and Gordon Bowling, Gordon Golf Club and Marian St Theatre. While supporting small businesses and promoting cultural diversity as Chair of the Multicultural Committee. My focus will continue to be on, enhancing and preserving community spaces & sports facilities, appropriate development that respects the built and natural environment and growing small business, celebrating culture and protecting the vulnerable. I’m committed to listening deeply, planning thoughtfully, and then acting in your best interest. With your support, I look forward to building an even brighter future for Gordon ward, serving you and taking action!

JENNIFER ANDERSON (IND, GORDON WARD)

Jennifer Anderson

My passion for community service has been lifelong. I am a company director on the board of the community bank at Lindfield, which donates its profits to local organisations and charities for worthy community projects. Along with my running mate, Michelle Key, who founded registered charity, North Shore Mums Smiles2U, we believe in the power of community to bring about positive change. Our independent team for Gordon ward offers experience and a track record of delivering results with integrity and dedication, advocating for the issues that matter to our residents. My fifteen years’ service as a councillor and mayor will provide the skills and leadership that Gordon Ward deserves. Our top priorities will be: returning council to a fiscally improved position that does not rely on the current council’s plan to substantially increase rates next year, which is untenable during a cost of living crisis; delivering a Local Environment Plan that is sensitive to Ku-ring-gai’s built and natural heritage, protecting the lifestyle our residents enjoy and restoring open space acquisitions, which previously saw 27,500 sq metres successfully purchased up to 2021. The current council has failed to acquire any new land for open space over the last nearly three years.

SARAH WINN (IND, GORDON WARD)

Sarah Winn

I’m running for council to bring a collaborative approach to meeting residential housing demands, while respecting Ku-ring-gai’s unique heritage and protecting its precious environment. I’m committed to ensuring council provides the services, efficient decision-making and recreational, sporting and cultural infrastructure which bring communities together. Having lived in many cities around the world, I value a vibrant, diverse and connected community, and understand the importance of local business driving employment and lifting prosperity. As a Killara resident and mother of three sons, I’ve always supported and advocated for my local community. I’m the chair of EnergyZE North Shore Inc, an active member of Ku-ring-gai Council’s Net Zero Champions group and Neighbourhood Watch. I’ve been involved with Killara High and community sport, both on the sidelines and now on the football field. This year I’m working with the Bstreet Smart road safety initiative for students. Legally trained, I have sustainability qualifications from MIT and Cambridge. I’m a program director at ImpactX, working on a Summit focused on smart city innovation and green infrastructure investment to make our cities sustainable, resilient and prosperous. I’m passionate about helping communities transition to a low carbon future and hope to contribute my expertise and experience.

CAROLINE ATKINSON (GREENS, ROSEVILLE WARD)

Caroline Atkinson
Caroline Atkinson

Ku-ring-gai has been my home for 15 years; I have a deep affinity with the area. On council I will be the voice to represent the values of our community. We can develop much needed housing in our area, including that for our essential workers such as nurses, without destroying its heritage and green spaces. Ku-ring-gai needs investment in schools, roads and public transport to support any growth. I believe the work of the council can address our communities needs and transition to renewable energy while encouraging appropriate local investment. Living in Ku-ring-gai means we are surrounded by nature such as the unique Blue Gum High forest and we are lucky enough to have good community facilities and parks. It is essential we keep these places special. Let’s not introduce contaminants such as synthetic turf which pollutes our environment with micro plastics. I will fight to get natural turf in places such as Charles Bean Oval so that our natural spaces remain accessible and safe for everyone. As a Roseville Councillor I will use my experience as a company director, as chair of an environmental advocacy agency and as a small-business owner to advocate for the Ku-ring-gai community and for our environment.

SAM NGAI (IND, ROSEVILLE WARD)

Sam Ngai
Sam Ngai

I have lived in Roseville, Killara and East Lindfield for 37 years. I attended Roseville Public and my wife attended Lindfield Public. We have three daughters, and our parents live in Roseville. I have degrees in engineering, accounting, environmental law, and business administration. I am a fellow at CPA Australia and graduated at the Australian Institute of Company Directors with top marks. I work as a Mayor and an Insurance Company Director. I volunteer as the Treasurer at East Lindfield Community Preschool and in children’s ministry at St Barnabas Roseville. I previously served as Secretary as KYDS Youth Counselling Lindfield. After becoming the 2024 Mayor, we brought in new leadership and commenced a review of our operations. To date we have identified over $100m in long-term cost savings through new technology, and in the coming term you will see a more cost-efficient council that takes customer service and community consultation seriously. I am keen to provide more housing for future generations, but this must be carefully planned. Our people deserve a great place to live that respects local character and promotes climate resilience. Recreation space, sustainability, traffic management, and delivering the Lindfield, Gordon, Turramurra and Killara Hubs are key priorities.

ALEC TAYLOR (IND, ROSEVILLE WARD)

Alec Taylor

My family has lived in Lindfield since 2010 and as a genuine independent and true local I will always represent the needs of our community. After a successful corporate career I switched focus to serving the community, including volunteering for Cerebral Palsy Alliance, bushcare, streamwatch, and disability support work. Since joining council in 2022 my top priority has been to support residents by listening and acting on their concerns. I have helped people with many issues such as footpaths, road safety and drainage. For our community I have improved recreational facilities, protected the environment, and saved community assets. Housing is a key concern for the residents of Roseville Ward (Lindfield and Roseville). We understand there’s a housing crisis and acknowledge we have a role to play. We need local planning, associated infrastructure, and to preserve trees and heritage. Council is taking legal action to drive the State Government to the negotiation table. If re-elected I will continue to be accessible and responsive, advocating for residents and helping them navigate council. I will focus on preserving the leafy character of Ku-ring-gai, improving customer service and community engagement, and improving our infrastructure, both existing and new.

CHRISTINE KAY (IND, ST IVES WARD)

Christine Kay

Having served as a councillor for St Ives Ward for six years and currently as deputy mayor since September 2023, I bring experience, dedication, and a deep understanding of the community’s needs. Having lived in the St Ives ward for 15 years, I am passionate about preserving its unique character and sense of community. I am running to continue serving and strengthening Ku-ring-gai with integrity and compassion. My top priorities include protecting Ku-ring-gai’s unique urban wildlife and natural environment, ensuring its preservation for future generations. I am passionate about advocating for essential services, particularly in mental health, disability support, and youth suicide prevention. Community safety and domestic violence prevention are also critical issues I am committed to addressing. Inclusivity is a core value for me, and I believe that all voices in our community should be heard. I actively advocate for diverse representation and involvement. Transparency and accountability are equally important. I prioritise open communication channels to build trust and foster integrity in local governance. With your support, I hope to continue representing our community effectively and responsibly, making a positive impact on the lives of our residents.

MARTIN SMITH (IND, ST IVES WARD)

I have served as an independent councillor for St Ives ward, representing the Ku-ring-gai electorate since September 2017. During my tenure, Ku-ring-gai Council has successfully delivered award-winning facilities, preserved open space, promoted design excellence, championed sustainability, and addressed complex residential issues. With over 30 years of residency in Ku-ring-gai alongside my wife and three children, I bring a wealth of experience to the table. As a former firefighter for NSW Fire Rescue and successful business owner of a national security company for three decades, I am equipped with strong leadership, planning, and communication skills, alongside high-level financial expertise. The interests of the local community are my top priority, and I constantly stand up for the residents of St Ives. Having served on the Heritage, Audit and Risk and the Sydney North Planning Panel committees, I have actively contributed to protecting residents’ interests, offering progressive solutions to complex residential and social problems. As our population increases, we face pressure to deliver additional housing and community facilities for the next generation of residents. As your independent councillor, I will continue to engage with residents, focusing on preserving and enhancing quality of life and wellbeing, conserving the character of what makes St Ives unique.

ANDREW CHENG (IND, ST IVES WARD)

Andrew Cheng

I have lived in Ku Ring Gai for nearly 20 years, and my family and I love this area for its cultural richness, natural environment, and geographical location. We have been residing in St Ives for 13 years. My wife and I have always worked in the private sector and currently run an IT products business. Our two children attend local secondary schools. Having previously served as an associate general manager in a Japanese multinational company in Sydney and as an entrepreneur, I deeply understand how the broader environment impacts people’s lives. Policies from the state and local governments directly affect the quality of life and interests of residents. For example, the Transport Oriented Development Program introduced by the State Government this year will have a significant impact on the property value and lifestyle for our Ku-ring-gai residents. In recent years, I served on the P & C committee at a local primary school. I received the executive director award from the NSW Department of Education in 2021, recognising my contributions to local education. I am also active in the local chamber of commerce, advocating for small businesses. In 2022, I was honoured with the community service award from the NSW Premier, acknowledging my contributions to the local community. In this upcoming local government election, My vision focuses on three key projects: Reducing the burden of the rising cost of living, improving residents’ quality of life, and boosting local business activities.

KRISTYN HAYWOOD (IND, WAHROONGA WARD)

Kristyn Haywood

The strengthening of good governance, fiscal responsibility, community consultation, transparency, environmental protection, and, most importantly, great leadership is what I’m offering my community. Last year, I ran as an independent candidate in the NSW State election for Wahroonga, securing nearly 10% of the vote. From there my dedication to serving the community grew, leading to co-founding Voices of Ku-ring-gai. Voices of Ku-ring-gai enabled me to represent our community at council forums, attend events, and gain media attention, including features in SMH’s Good Weekend and interviews on ABC Radio about preserving our urban forests from vandalism, overdevelopment, rezoning, and reclassifications. While we’ve had some success I can better advocate for our community as a Wahroonga ward councillor. Skills such as critical thinking, strategic planning, creativity and strong leadership from completing a master of business and 20 years in the position of CEO and senior leadership educator of people for success will be useful in the overall goal of collaborating with councillors to serve all Ku-ring-gai residents. This September marks 50 years since my late grandmother, Vera Butler, was elected for a second term as an independent councillor. She tirelessly worked for her community, including saving a patch of red gum forest. I hope to follow in her footsteps.

KIM WHEATLEY (IND, WAHROONGA WARD)

I have lived in Wahroonga for over a decade and my three daughters attended school in Pymble since 2009. I have held senior executive positions in blue chip Australian and US companies for over 20 years. I became a councillor in 2022 and contribute my experience in business, planning, budgeting, and communication. I have always made myself available to help the residents of Wahroonga ward. I have enjoyed meeting you, listening to you, and advocating for your interests, and I would look forward to doing it again if re-elected. I feel strongly about the protection of trees, women’s sporting facilities, services to ratepayers and providing the homes of tomorrow in a manner that is sensitive to the environment. I have delivered progress on each of these this term. In speaking with residents, I also know your strong desire for reviving the Turramurra town centre including the provision of a new library and community facilities at the Turramurra Hub. Recent changes in NSW housing policy have escalated the urgency, business case and viability of these projects and given my strong relationship with councillors I am well positioned to make it happen.

CEDRIC SPENCER (IND, WAHROONGA WARD)

Cedric Spencer
Cedric Spencer

I am a solicitor and live in Turramurra with my wife and son. My qualifications include juris doctor, doctor of business administration, master of business, graduate diploma in laws, graduate diploma in transport and distribution management; and advanced diploma in transport. I was elected as a councillor for Wahroonga ward in 2017. During my tenure, I have served as mayor, deputy mayor, chair of the Ku-ring-gai Traffic Committee and member of Sydney North Planning Panel. Although I am a member of the Liberal Party, a local branch president, state council delegate and member of standing committee on state policy, I am an independent councillor, mayor, and deputy mayor, unendorsed by the party. That is, I represent the constituents, not the party. I will be focused on the following issues: Stopping Transport Oriented Developments (TODs) in Wahroonga ward and stopping the spread of high-rises in North Wahroonga, Eastern Rd and Princes St. Promoting sensible developments such as the Turramurra town centre project. Building more footpaths in Wahroonga ward. Working with the State Government on TODs implemented in Gordon, Killara, Lindfield and Roseville. Discontinue legal action against the State Government and start negotiating. Stopping the blanket listing of properties without due process and just cause.

JACK ABADEE (IND, WAHROONGA WARD)

Jack Abadee
Jack Abadee

I’m Jack Abadee, and I’m proud to be running for Wahroonga Ward. Having lived on the Upper North Shore for nearly my entire life, I understand our community’s unique character and needs. I attended Pymble Public and Barker, played for local sports teams like Bannockburn Rovers and now on the committee of St Ives Wahroonga Cricket Club, and served as president of my local Liberal Party branch. My campaign is focused on bringing a commonsense approach to council, with my ‘6R’ plan: roads, recreation, responsible development, revitalisation, rubbish, and rates. In my campaign, I’ve already doorknocked over 1500 homes, directly hearing the concerns of fellow residents that in the past have never felt the opportunity to raise them. I believe we need to revitalise our public spaces, including local shopping districts, to promote community use. I also want to upgrade footpaths to ensure pedestrian safety, and make our recreation areas more accessible. For example, installing digital locks on public bathrooms to ensure they’re open during peak times but locked at times more prone to vandalism. I want a council that listens, responds, and delivers on what matters.

JAIMIE GORDON (IND, WAHROONGA WARD)

Jaimie Gordon
Jaimie Gordon

My name is Jaimie Gordon and I will be standing as an independent representing the constituents of Ku-ring-gai in the Wahroonga ward. I am a professional with over 25 years of experience in the banking and finance industry. Qualifications include a masters in applied finance and investments, bachelor of economics and a bachelor of commerce. I am married with two children who attend local schools, have lived in North Turramurra for the past 12 years and wouldn’t live anywhere else! I believe in transparency, integrity and fairness. I will seek to maintain the beautiful character of our community, improve green space, preserve community land while working effectively with the state government. I vow to listen, learn and respond in a timely manner to community concerns. I am committed to containing high rise development to existing major shopping and transport hubs, such as the Turramurra hub, and will seek to limit the spread of medium density development across quiet residential streets far from suitable infrastructure.

I have just completed my first term as a councillor, which I have really enjoyed while achieving some great results for our community. I hail from Dublin, Ireland and have lived in Sydney for over 20 years. I am married with two children, I have an amazing wife and two lovely dogs. I live in Northbridge and I am the only councillor who lives in Northbridge. My focus since becoming a councillor has been and always will be about putting our resident`s needs first. My platform can be summed with the 3 R`s: roads, rates, rubbish and families/community. I am not here to save the world, I want my residents to be able to live, work and play in our city. I will represent all of our residents regardless of the issue they are raising. Everybody deserves a voice in the council. In this first term I was the only councillor to oppose the special variation rate rises. I improved on street parking for all residents on streets put under pressure with illegal boat parking. I stood up against council’s decision to move away from running child care centres. I championed and won for all community members to have improved access to sporting fields and changing facilities on Sundays. I advocated for the long term support of community clubs. I advocated for the chief executive officers title be changed back to that of general manager, with greater transparency and accountability for that position.

I feel a deep sense of pride and passion for our area. I was born and raised in Willoughby, went to school in Willoughby and am now raising my family here. I have been on council for almost 12 years now, and in that time, I have had the opportunity to serve as deputy mayor and your Middle Harbour Ward Councillor. I have a strong track record in delivering projects for the community. My key priorities for the Middle Harbour Ward in Willoughby City are: quality parks and playgrounds, access for sporting clubs, supporting local business, investment in infrastructure and maintenance, better customer service, protecting our tree canopy, value for money for your rates. Some of my major achievements on council this term are: 12 years of continued investment in Willoughby Park (building new community room, change rooms, canteen, new toilets, and new lighting, playground and gym equipment), a motion to increase streetscapes and parks maintenance by $2 million in 2024/25, saved our beloved kerbside collection for bulky goods, which encourages recycling, and instigated the upgrade for the new Willoughby Bowling Club kitchen.

ROBERT SAMUEL (IND, MIDDLE HARBOUR WARD)

Robert Samuel

As a lifetime local, elected with mayor Tanya Taylor, my focus is on community matters. During this time, I have worked closely with my colleagues to put our community first, as my independence is only valuable if I can co-operate with colleagues and stand separate from special interests to get things done. I have been listening, hearing your stories, ensuring your voice is heard and action taken. My team, Stephanie Spencer, Olivia Huang, Diana Brown and I are local, independent and committed, because community matters. On re-election our priorities will be to continue my work on council to ensure your voice is heard and you are involved early in decisions. Our priorities include: Revitalising shared spaces, better linkages between public places and places to play and spaces to study. I have lived in the Willoughby area with my family for 22 years. I have served on P&Cs and for charities supporting broader social issues. I am passionate about our local environment and have been on the committees of local progress associations and environmental organisations. I actively campaigned against the Beaches Link project because of its environmental and health impacts and organised the Save Flat Rock Gully group. I’ve followed the efforts of some councillors to have council take a strong stand against the Beaches Link and served on the Flat Rock Gully Advisory Committee. I observed a failure by council to inform and engage with the community. I feel that, with my background in adult education and 30 years in not-for-profit organisations in education, training, health and environment, I will bring valuable critical thinking and collaborative skills to Council. My priorities are to achieve an open and transparent council which allows residents to effectively participate in local decision making, ensure that density is not achieved at the cost of tree cover, green space, heritage and increased congestion.

In 2021, I ran my campaign on bringing a new voice and vision as a new councillor in the City of Willoughby. Over the past three years I have shown a deep commitment to the community, consistently delivering on promises and actively listening to residents’ needs. I have created a solid foundation for future progress and wish to continue listening to the needs of our community and finding practical solutions. Key elements of my platform for 2024 include: Protecting heritage and natural environment: continue to preserve our unique heritage and bushland for future generations. Sustainable development: development should meet the highest standards by assessing planning proposals on their individual merits common sense decision making: bringing a pragmatic approach to council decisions I will continue to ensure that policies are programs are grounded in practicality and effectiveness. Enhancing open space and sporting facilities: increase the availability and quality of open spaces and sports facilities. Addressing traffic and safety: improving traffic management and safety issues particularly in high-traffic areas as the community continues to grow. Fiscal management: commitment to responsible fiscal management to ensure that council resources are used efficiently and effectively, prioritising transparency and accountability

I have been an active member of the local Naremburn Ward community for over 15 years, and for the past three it has been my great honour to serve as local councillor. The Naremburn Ward is a wonderful place to live, but our community wants action on several fronts. This includes better maintenance of streetscapes, open space and roads, and more multi- purpose recreational facilities. We need community views to be more thoroughly built into project concepts, designs and delivery – including in the revitalisation of our local centres. We need to improve how we protect our bushland, urban tree canopy and environment. We need more focus on reducing emissions, waste management and recycling. I will continue to advocate to the State Government on important issues including preserving Royal North Shore Hospital for growth and clinical care. At the last election I committed to being a strong voice for our neighbourhoods and to bring fresh ideas to council. Over the last three years I’ve drawn great pleasure from helping and representing residents and businesses on over 350 separate issues. Together we’ve made improvements but there is still much that needs to be done!

I am committed to revitalising our shared spaces, building stronger communities, delivering a safe and active environment, creating a sustainable future and ensuring your voice matters. My priorities include boosting the local village economy through workshops, and networking opportunities, for small businesses. Supporting start-ups and fellow entrepreneurs in their business journey. Encouraging people of all ages and cultures to learn from and support one another, celebrating diversity and fostering inclusivity. Enhancing community cohesion for apartment dwellers.

NIC WRIGHT (IND, NAREMBURN WARD)

I have proudly served as a councillor for Willoughby City Council since 2012, representing the Naremburn ward where I have lived all my life. As the current deputy mayor, I am deeply committed to our community and understand the challenges our area faces. With a fast-growing population, our street maintenance needs improving, our local roads are increasingly congested, and council services are not meeting expectations. Since I was first elected, I have championed over $15 million in administrative savings, redirecting these funds to improving community services and infrastructure. I believe Council must be run more efficiently, with residents already facing cost-of-living pressures without the added burden of increasing council rates. Over the next term of council, Willoughby will experience even more pressure with increased density and development driven by State Government rezoning plans. I will ensure our community continues to have a strong voice in how these changes are implemented. My priority has always been delivering development that respects the unique character of our neighbourhoods, listens to residents’ concerns, and protects our precious open space and bushland.

HUGH ERIKSSON (IND, SAILORS BAY WARD)

Hugh Eriksson
Hugh Eriksson

My name is Hugh Eriksson I am a current Councillor representing Sailors Bay ward on Willoughby City Council, I am also a former deputy mayor. I have been serving for over 12 years, the longest of any Ward candidate. My priorities are to return council to core principles – service delivery. Council has strayed into too many state and federal issues this last term and we need to focus back on maintenance and financial responsibility. I am proud to be a lifelong resident and again ask for your support for experience to be represented on council.

JOHN MORATELLI (IND, SAILORS BAY WARD)

In 2021, after a long career as a consumer lawyer with Legal Aid, I stood successfully for election to council. I’ve lived in Castlecrag for over 25 years and raised my family here. I’m a keen commuter cyclist, bushcare volunteer and president of the Willoughby Environmental Protection Association. I also serve on the board of an early childhood charity. I’m standing for re-election because I believe that the community needs strong advocates for environmental protection and community engagement to deal with the challenges we face from climate change, housing affordability, biodiversity loss and greater density. My priorities are: Ensuring that density doesn’t come at the expense of liveability by increasing our urban canopy and enabling residents to avoid further congestion by giving them options such as public transport, cycling and walking, and car-sharing. To utilise the education, experience and skills of our community to deal with the challenges we face by informing them of what council can and does do, engaging them around key plans such as the community strategic plan and supporting them to participate in advisory committees and volunteering. To underground suitable council car parks for the benefit of the community. To improve council transparency and accountability

JAM XIA (IND, WEST WARD)

Jam Xia

I have been a councillor since 2021 and enjoyed every second of the job since I started. It is also an absolute honour to take care of the area and the community that I love the most – Willoughby LGA. Over the last few years, our council budget has been stretched with minimal surplus, my objectives for the 2024 term are to ensure council simplify process and procedure, using technology systems to develop customer centric standard operating procedure and service level agreements for each task to allow resident requests and applications to complete with a timely outcome/decision. At the same time focus our resources on the streetscape/open space maintenance. With more developments we are all experiencing busier traffic and higher density, which puts our precious open space under pressure. Existing ovals, gardens and parks should be our highest priority to ensure our kids and family enjoy them when they visit. The term has been short and full of challenges but in spite of all of this, we have many achievements. Some of my proudest moments were to remove the intrusive digital advertisement sign near Garden of Remembrance, negotiated an abandoned trolley policy with our shopping centres and quadrupled council’s investment portfolio returns. The best is yet to come for the new term, re-elect Councillor Jam Xia. Keeping it Real with Willoughby.

I have been an active member of the Chatswood West community for almost 40 years with volunteer roles at the KU Chatswood West Kindergarten and public and high school P & Cs. I have recently served on council’s Traffic and Active and Integrated Transport Advisory Committees. My family is multicultural – late wife Fiorella was Italian, and daughters-in-law are Hong Kong born Chinese and Australian born Chinese. I have four beautiful grandchildren living locally, of mixed heritage. I believe Willoughby Council can be more efficient, saving ratepayers’ money, and communicate better with residents. Densification of Chatswood with related access to green space and schools issues, and increased traffic, is not adequately reported or discussed. I have tracked high rise development proposals in Chatswood (over 20) as council changed its LEP and DCP regulations to facilitate densification and am appalled that after all that preparation the State Government is encouraging developers to seek 30% greater building heights and removing significant development controls from council. Council is not adequately communicating this to Willoughby residents. I am a cyclist and have encouraged council to act on signage and safety issues, particularly in west ward with Fullers Rd bike route transition a win for cyclists.

CATHY DULOY (LAB, WEST WARD)

I’ve lived on the lower north shore for most of my life and settled in Lane Cove North with my family in 2007. A lawyer by background, I have experience in government relations, governance and risk management. I’m passionate about the environment, equity and the wonderful community of Willoughby. I’ve fundraised for several charities, in particular for cancer research. I’m also currently studying Migration Law at the University of Technology Sydney. I recently retired from full-time work and now have the time to give back to the community. I’m running as a Labor candidate for council because I want to secure a better future for Willoughby and make a strong contribution to our incredible community. My top priorities include: 1. Sensible development solutions – collaborating with the community and State Government to deliver development that maintains the character of Willoughby while addressing the deepening housing crisis. 2. The environment – ensuring that Council protects the native bushland of Willoughby LGA as well as the health of our extensive waterways, while expanding and upgrading community green spaces. 3. Affordability – committing to no increase to residential or business council rates, beyond government indexation for the next four years to help address cost of living pressures.

MICHELLE CHUANG (IND, WEST WARD)

I am Michelle Chuang, a lifelong Sydney resident. My journey began in the vibrant heart of this city, where I served as school captain during my secondary education and later contributed as a student councillor throughout my university years. Presently, I am dedicated to serving our community at the local medical centre, providing vital health services. Alongside my professional role, I am the proud mother of two young daughters who are flourishing at our local public school. I am running for local office this September with a steadfast commitment to advancing education. My goal is to ensure that every child in our community has access to the resources and opportunities necessary for success. I am equally dedicated to securing a promising future for the next generations by advocating for policies that offer stability and promote growth. At the heart of my campaign is a focus on strengthening Willoughby’s community wellbeing. I believe that a healthy, connected community is the cornerstone of a prosperous society. Together, we can build a brighter future for everyone.

CRAIG CAMPBELL (IND, WEST WARD)

I’ve had the honour of representing west ward for the last seven years as a west ward councillor, as deputy mayor (2019-2021), as a member of the SNPP (2019-2022), and as council’s representative on the board of the Dougharty Apartments Retirement Village since 2022. I am an entrepreneur with a business background, currently successfully running a small business with 35 employees. I bring experience, competence, and common sense to local governance. I believe council decisions and strategies should benefit the community as a whole, not just a narrow subsection. I believe it’s important to act with forethought and financial prudence to benefit the community of tomorrow. For next term of council, I’d like to see us raise the bar on resident customer service and responsiveness (in progress but with more to do), secure a sustainable financial future, deliver on infrastructure projects (big ones like the Gore Hill sport centre as well as countless small ones like half basketball courts or safe pedestrian crossings where we can get bang for our buck), and continue to manage the pressure for development in a way that minimises the impact on residents yet satisfies the state targets given to us.
