Australians will now be able to order living room furniture, outdoor barbecues and other bulky items on Amazon and receive them the next day after the opening of a new multimillion-dollar distribution hub in Sydney’s west.
Amazon has opened the doors on a new $90m fulfilment centre in Horsley Park, dedicated to distributing large items in response to growing online demand.
The facility in Horsley Park is one of two purpose-built centres planned for the area under a $490m project to fast track online order deliveries for Australian customers.
The BWU6 facility spans 33,400 square metres – or about four and a half rugby fields – and has the capacity to store up to 600,000 large items.
Once fully operational, the centre is expected to support more than 360 local jobs and process “tens of thousands” of orders a day.
Amazon Country Manager Janet Menzies said the centre will allow Australians to buy and receive big item orders quicker than ever before.
“It’s about how fast can we get orders out to customers, and this centre will enable us to offer next-day deliveries for large item orders,” Ms Menzies said.
“And heading into the Christmas period we pride ourselves in being able to serve what customers need right away.
“Historically we’ve had really late order cut-offs, so when we make that promise of next day delivery – we take that seriously.”
Construction has also begun for a second much larger facility at the Goodman and Brickworks’ Oakdale East Industrial Estate in Horsley Park and is slated for completion early next year.
The second centre is expected to span a whopping 209,000 square metres across four levels, with a capacity to hold up to 1.6m large items.
Ms Menzies said the opening of the purpose-built fulfilment centre would also give local small businesses opportunity to partner with Amazon to store inventory and co-ordinate deliveries alongside major retail brands.
Sandra McNeil, Amazon Australia Director of Operations said: “We are committed to supporting thousands of Australian businesses.”
“The addition of this fulfilment centre to our existing network will provide valuable opportunities for local businesses to serve their customers in Western Sydney and around Australia.”
The facility also features a 200KW solar array and a fleet of more than 70 lithium battery-powered industrial trucks.
