Woolworths supermarket at Kirribilli to hit deli, shops

Woolworths is under fire for its plans to open a store at Kirribilli village in what one critic said appears to be a new strategy.

Woolworths is under fire for its plans to open a store at Kirribilli village in what one critic said appears to be a new strategy.

The grocery giant will in late January open one of its smaller Metro outlets where a Westpac branch used to be at the corner of Broughton and Burton St.

North Sydney Mayor Jilly Gibson was surprised Woolworths would open at such a small site.

“My fear is Woolworths will knock out the fruit shop, Italian deli, fish and chip shop and others,” she said.

“This appears to be a new strategy — coming into our tiny villages.

“They have the power of the Woolworths brand and will be selling their dollar-a-litre milk.

“Along with members of the Kirribilli community, I have concerns it will change the dynamics of the village.”

Kirribilli mother of four Jodie Elsum said she was a bit torn on the supermarket’s impending arrival.

“My initial thoughts are for the poor local business owners. I love to support them,” she said.

“And a big brand name is going to take away the boutique feel of Kirribilli. I think that’s a shame.”

However Mrs Elsum said she did occasionally drive to supermarkets, and one nearby would be convenient.

Kirribilli Deli co-owner George Kokoris said Woolworths would “reshape the landscape” for surrounding shops.

He and brother Tom have run the deli for 20 years, which offers gourmet goods, fruit and cakes.

Mr Kokoris said they would not know the extent of the impact until after Woolworths opened.

“We’ll see what part of the business it affects most, and that will be the part that goes,” he said.

A lower income had worrying consequences.

“You’re tied to a lease,” Mr Kokoris said. “You can’t pack your bags and go.

“And it can affect you personally because you’ve given guarantees to people.”

Woolworths undertook research in September which found support for one of its Metro stores, according to a spokeswoman.

Woolworths Fuel and Metro managing director Steve Greentree said the store had been carefully designed in a way that was sensitive to the village.

The store will include a cafe and quick meal section, although the range is still to be finalised.
