Woolworths Mosman: The 65 changes which bosses hope will secure approval

Woolies’ new plan to finally get approval for its Mosman store includes removing any mention of the brand from the exterior. These are the 65 changes bosses think will secure approval.

Woolworths has made dozens of changes to the design of its proposed supermarket in Mosman in its latest bid for the beleaguered project to be given the green light.

Restoring current heritage buildings and restricting Woolies advertising material on exterior sections of the building are among 65 new design changes the supermarket giant has released for its proposed $5.3 million outlet in the Military Rd shopping strip.

The biggest changes are to the four existing shops at the development site with new plans outlining a commitment to retain and undertake conservation works to the facades and the front sections of the shops, restoring them to their original character.

The rear, less significant parts of the buildings, will also be retained in sections with a new “market structure” built.

And lower north shore shoppers wouldn’t be seeing any Woolworths advertising or signage material above awnings on Military Rd as part of changes designed to ensure “architectural features of buildings remain prominent.”

There are also dozens of other minor amendments including retaining a stained-glass window and sections of original brickwork along with minor expansions to a kerb area around outside bins, relocation of a substation and the addition of a french door within the supermarket.

The alterations were made during ongoing proceedings by Fabcot – the development arm of Woolworths – in its appeal to the Land and Environment Court against Mosman Council’s decision to refuse the proposed store last year.

Mosman Council knocked back the project on grounds including impacts on the heritage of the existing streetscape, parking and traffic congestion.

Woolworths general manager of property development Andrew Loveday said the company remains committed to building the proposed store.

“Our design plans have been updated to address concerns raised by Mosman Council during the conciliation process,” he said.

“We believe we’ve put forward a proposal that is consistent with the council’s planning framework.

“We look forward to continuing to engage on this matter during the next steps in the court process.”

A heritage study commissioned by Woolworths found the changes would have “a positive impact on the Military Road streetscape and the conservation area”.

“The proposed works will not only be sympathetic to the character of the area but will in fact enhance the streetscape and restore the appearance of the buildings, back to their former conditions,” the study stated.

The case is due to return to court later this year and if approved the store would include a new cafe, 20 carparking spaces, a bakery, sushi bar and a loading area.

The site is currently home to businesses including Toni & Guy hairdresser, a noodle bar, and a clothing shop.

Mosman Council said it would notify residents of the proposed amendments.
